The German Secret Service
« on: 29 April 2014, 07:25:02 PM »
I am thinking we need a counterweight in Germany for the abominable Society of Thule, so I shall look into writing up those brutally efficient inhabitants of Wilhelmstrasse.

However, I need one of our German-speaking chaps to give me the correct name for this organisation in German please.

Is there a Bavarian in den haus?  ;)

From 1900 to 1918 Wilhelmstraße 54 was inhabitet by the
Geheimes Zivilkabinett des preußischen Königs und deutschen Kaisers.
It was the monarchs personal office of rulership.
The boss of the Geheimes Zivilkabinett managed correspondence between monarch and legislative.

If this is what you are talking about, this institution is not comparable with later inhabitants under Nazi reign.

...and I am living in Bavaria by the way.  ;)

From "Vocabulary of German Military Terms and Abbreviations," Army War College, "Reprint of a British Document," 1917, I have the following, for whatever it's worth:

Also:

Abteilung has a nice ring to it. Sounds innocuous, and spy-like: "Section IIIb."

I was talking aloud to myself. A habit of the old: they choose the wisest person present to speak to; the long explanations needed by the young are wearying.

A stouty Bavarian reports to duty, Sir!
Btw, the Thule Organisation in reality was not a Prussian secret lodge but a Bavarian  ;)
Abteilung IIIb sounds great

As an alternative to a government body to counter to the Society of Thule, I was I was thinking of using the Teutonic Order. Their full title was the Order of Brothers of the German House of Saint Mary in Jerusalem. After Napoleon ordered the disollution of the Order in 1809, their only holdings were in Austria and the Tyrol (out of Boney's reach), where they continued as a Roman Catholic order throughout the 19th century.

In the IHMN world, I see a worried Vatican realising the need for an active presence in (protestant) Germany to counter the spreading Sociery of Thule. Their solution is to fund the restoration and militarisation of the Teutonic Order, harking back to its crusading origins.

HVF already has stats for Templars and Vatican forces including Knights of St John, so these are a good starting point for such a force. Also, Tsuba miniatures do some nice post-WW1 figures in Tyrollean clothing and armed with rifles and support weapons, which would be perfect as basic low level troop types.

You may have noticed that one of vsfguthroth's posts listed heads of the organization, if you need some names:

Chiefs of A III b
1889-1892: Major Artur Waenker v. Dankenschweil
1892-1895: Major Mueller
1895-1900: Major Friedrich Theodor Dahme
1900-1910: Lieutenant Colonel Karl Brose
1910-1913: Lieutenant Colonel Wilhelm Heye
1913-1918: Lieutenant Colonel Walter Nicolai

Also, for more characters, there is this link for names of German spies in World War I, which time-wise is in the ballpark:

Can't wait to see the new Company. Remember, there does need to be a Mata Hari in there!

Yes, a good idea to use of a Mata Hari figure!

Any other ideas for suitable minis for a bavarian company?
