Japanese Artillery - colour?
« on: 12 July 2008, 06:52:39 PM »
I'm building up my Japanese army for the Back of Beyond and have a couple of field guns which need to be assembled and painted. However, I'm not sure which colour/s would be correct for Japanese artillery pieces in WW1 / 1920's?

Any help would be very welcome.

Thanks

Jim

To the best of my knowledge it was Olive green.
Em dezembro de '81
Botou os ingleses na roda
3 a 0 no Liverpool
Ficou marcado na história
E no Rio não tem outro igual

E agora seu povo

I noticed somewhere in passing that some guns were in a colour similar to the British bronze green.  Don't remember where, though.  Sorry.  :(

Thanks,

This seems to be a bit of a mystery all round. I'm surprised there isn't an Osprey title on it, something like 'Imperial Japanese Field Gun carriage paint chips 1919-1937'  ;)

Just found these pictures, thanks to philthydirtyanimal's Flickr albums.  It's a Japanese Type 41 Mountain Gun, apparently used from 1908 to 1945.  Looks like bronze green to me!

Thanks. That gives me a good idea of the shade I'll paint my field gun. Interesting markings on the shield as well.  :D

Wow Archangel that is a great photo! I have seen plenty of the ammo carrying cases for the gun on Saipan but I never got to see one of the guns as I think that they were salvaged in the 60s. My guess is that many of the guns inthe Pacific did not have shields. I also wonder if mule packed guns had the shields as well

See the photo I posted on a similar thread - presumably the Olive/bronze green you guys have been referring to

It is also interesting that you should mention many Japanese guns without gun shields...this was a useful way of reducing haulage weight with the British 3.7" QF Mtn Hwz in Burma
