Toy theater diorama views
« on: May 07, 2014, 04:27:46 PM »
Lateley I visited the german historical museum in  Berlin. Somewhere hidden in their exhibition there are some examples of  toy theaters made of paper and cardboard.

They were used to give an illusion of three-dimensional depth.

I really like those so i tried the principle for some photos with a miniature. Just for proof of concept, nothing fancy at all. Maybe I will go further into this in the future.

Many pictures and templates for paper theaters can be found at the national museum of the Netherlands (http://www.geheugenvannederland.nl/?/nl/homepage) , search for "Papieren theaters".

Too old to Rock'n'Roll, too young to die, perfect for tabletop adventures;)

That's an interesting idea... reminds me of a book (more of an art thing?) by Edward Gorey; 'The Tunnel Calamity'.  It opens like a concertina and there's a lens in the cover that you look through to view a scene set in old Victorian style tunnels populated by all manner of odd folk, and a large beast.

A view through the lens on the cover:

Nice mini and paint, btw - who makes that?

There used to be military scripts for some of the Victorian toy theatres - "Battle of Waterloo" etc.

This site still has a version of "Blackbeard the pirate":

the concept of forced perspective is older then we think.
here is the well preserved example of Vincenzo Scamozzi's theatre scenery in Andrea Palladio's Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza, 16th century
