Sorry, Jimbo, I missed your question.

Argonor is right on the money. Hugo Pratt, just about my favourite comic artist (my avatar is one of his, too).

The images are from an early pre-Corto Maltese story called "Anna Nella Jungla" set in British East Africa prior to the Great War. It's one of the many Pratt books never released in an English edition (Grrr! Bah!). The one I have is the French one "Ann de la Jungle", because of all the options out there French was the language I struggle the least with.

The story does contain a kind of proto-Corto sailor type, who I guess evolved into the real thing. The background images on my blog were taken from the same book.

Edit: Wait, no most of them were. The Zulus are from "Cato Zulu", another Pratt graphic novel series set in the Zulu War.

Yeah, but in English they are hard to get hold of. There were some American Editions of Corto Maltese out in the 80s, but they are mostly out of print and can go for silly money. For example, I bought "Corto Maltese in Africa" for about a pound in a bargain bin in Nostalgia and Comics in Birmingham about twenty years ago. The cheapest second-hand copy on Amazon right now is about £30, and new copies go for £60+.

The book I pinched the pics from earlier in the thread is a brand new copy, and cheap to get. Not in English though, that one has never been released in English. Pratt never seems to have taken off in the English-speaking market, so while his stuff is constantly in print in Italian, French and other European language editions, the English books are collectors items. They did however, release "The Ballad of the Salt Sea", the first Corto Maltese book in English a couple of years ago. So there is hope that we may get some more if that one sells.

You also have the series Fort Weeling in english and french (although not Corto Maltese) and the Scorpions of the Desert (or Desert Scorpions) series.
Nice books.
