Plynkes if this is not allowed feel free to delete the entry.

Pff! Bollocks to that.

I think it's great when we are inspired to do better by what we see here on LAF. I've always tried (but not always succeeded) to have that attitude rather than thinking "shit, I'm never gonna be able to paint like that, I may as well not bother."

I love what you've done with the improved versions. Not sure if it's simply the new photographs (which seem to have better lighting than the originals), the new painting, or a bit of both; but you have pushed them into a different league.

Wonderful work ladies and gents, wonderful work all round.

I think it's great when we are inspired to do better by what we see here on LAF. I've always tried (but not always succeeded) to have that attitude rather than thinking "shit, I'm never gonna be able to paint like that, I may as well not bother."

I remember looking at some of Kevin Dallimore's stuff years back and thinking, "I'll never be anywhere near that good". Then for some reason I decided to really pinpoint what it was I admired and take it one step at a time. I remember thinking the way he painted wood was awesome with the stripey grain showing, so the next model I did I tried to copy it. It went so-so. The next one I tried was a little better and the next, etc..

It's still really odd to me that people look at stuff I've painted and seem to think it's not a standard they can reach. Course you can! There's nothing I do that anyone else can't do, and the same goes for every painter. It's just practice, practice, practice on getting the effects you like. If you could see some of the stuff I was churning out 20 years ago ... yeeesh.

Interesting comments Cubs made about painting.
I find for me it's about the time I spend on each figure.
I try to only paint on a figure for an average of 30 to 35 minutes.
If I up that to say an hour, I would have a better looking figure?
Yes, but I feel that it would only slightly better.
I guess in the end, how happy are you with what you have painted?
That is what counts.
I believe I have found for me that happy medium.

There's nothing I do that anyone else can't do, and the same goes for every painter. It's just practice, practice, practice on getting the effects you like.

There's a story John Blanche used to tell. Someone asked him how to learn paint like him. John replied:

"Easy, just paint 10,000 miniatures."

I'm getting close to halfway there... in numbers at least.

NO. 77: Captain Bertie Featherstonehaugh of the Devonshire regiment, relief of Chitral, 1895

This is the Foundry 'Featherstonehaugh' figure from their Darkest Africa range. He is painted in the traditional 3 layered style using Foundry paints and will be one of the heroes or leaders in my Triumph & Tragedy NW Frontier Anglo Indian force.

Despite my dodgy eyesight meaning that I really struggle to layer on top of black undercoat these days, I managed to do him justice as there isn't a whole lot of detail to worry about.

A worthy opponent for Atheling's Pathans, methinks... :)
