1st Buntai ready to fight!
« on: 24 June 2014, 01:54:40 AM »
Well, chaps I've gotten my first buntai ready to go for games of Ronin (or Samurai variants on Sharpe Practice or Dux Brit or Hail Caesar once I get the rest done and buy even more!  lol). Did the black lacquered armour by washing black ink over a dark grey. Next buntai I will use a slightly lighter grey to try and get a bit more highlights coming through. Then it was Army painter dip for the shading.

The mon is the Japanese character for 'tea', my drug of choice. Back story is my daimyo is the son of a tea-merchant.

Here they are, fresh from the flocking tub:

"Peace" is that brief, glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading.

Interesting stuff  8)

How many are you going for in total?

I'm afraid I'm going to be all historical on you now  :)

Merchants were treated with disdain by the samurai class (and were even considered lower than farmers etc) so the chance of the son of a merchant rising to the position of daimyo are nill.

I like the idea though for a bit of fun  :)

cheers

They look superb.  I like the mon too, historical or not.  It really adds some flavour (!!).

I know Jim but I read there was a Daimyo who used an apothecary's bag for his umo jishu (?) because his dad had been a druggist.

Several daimyos started out as ashigaru

To answer your other question, I'm not sure. ;-) I've got about 3 dozen in this lot plus some civilians. Next division will have 3 or 4 dozen as well.

Uma jirushi  :)

Toyotomi was probably the most famous ashigaru 'jolly jump up' and I wonder if your daimyo was the son of an shogunal apothecary. Where did you read about it?

Looking forward to seeing many, many more  :)

Pretty sure it was in Osprey's "Samurai Heraldry"

Or maybe my daimyo just really REALLY like's his cuppa?  :D

But at least it's relatively easy to paint while still being interesting. I had thought to try and do something like a cherry blossom in a circle and then went and made more tea....  lol

You have to do a scenario where a rival faction is trying to steal your tea.

Cheers Jim! And yes I do for the above mentioned tea-stealing scenario!  :D
Any idea what a tea chest looks like?   ???

Just normal boxes really, possibly with the producers mark on them. The first tea exported from Japan was in 1610 by the Dutch.

The Perry civilian carrying the two loads on a shoulder yoke could be carrying tea.

I'm not 100% sure whether the boxes were tin lined or not as early as the Sengoku period, I'm getting my wife to look into it. They were certainly tin lined in the Edo period as Japan's export to the international market increased dramatically.

Tea was considered more of a rich mans pursuit so an ambush to steal some from I rival daimyo would make for an entertaining little skirmish  :)

cheers

James
