Gaming Matt, Fleece

I discovered a new technique invented by a fellow wargamer from Berlin.
It uses the stuff you put on the floor when your renovate your flat. Its "Flies" in german and I think it translates into fleece, but I am not sure. Its a kind of rather soft fabrique with a thin plastic undercoat. Very usefull because no colour gets through the fabrique. It costed me 7€ for a roll of 1x10m.

Here are a few pics I took druing making the matt.

Firstly I packed all the stuff neede together: its a rather fast thing.




Then I put the paint on the fabrique, rather Jackson Pollock style.



Then I mixed the colours directly on the fleece, and put some static grass onto in...



Its intended to be an african matt, so its very yellowish. I added a river by just throwing some green and blue onto it.





And a detail shot...



Took me around an hour...

Its very cheap, light in weight and easy to build...

Very useful for on the move gaming or storage.

I bet you have to move rather quickly before the paint soaks in and drys?

But the effect is very good!

Anyway, I always wondered if one could make something usable out of that stuff... and then it's so easy and good looking!

It's 'fleece', and that's not exactly the same thing in English, but close.

That looks amazing! Can it be bought any wider than 1m in the UK?

Also, does the river look furry on the table?

Great idea and it looks really good.

I see it listed as a felt drop cloth in US suppliers but it doesn't look like it gets more than a meter wide.

It's not fleece in the UK, it looks like felt ( which is used under carpets ) but looks thinner, and I've not seen the plastic backing before.

I think the color blend I got is out of stock (reets relish) but they have plenty of choices.

Does anyone know what this kind of material is called in the UK? Some googling of likely terms hasn't returned anything.

If it is available in Germany has anyone seen it in Lidel or Aldi?

Yep, they usually have it once or twice a year when they also have wallpaint and all that stuff.

Try an automotive supply shop, its a material often used under the carpeting.  You can also try a shop that sells moving supplies, they are also used as cheaper tarps.

I have some of that - purchased when I was working in Hamburg - and have used it for roads by coating it with white/pva glue and fine sand.
