WW1 Late War Brits
« on: July 28, 2008, 04:22:24 PM »
I plan a little force with 3-4 platoons + HMG for the Late War. The Highlanders will be my elite. Here´s the first one:

Obviously, he´s not only nuts, he´s hazelnuts.

Lovely piece. The lambskin (if it´s called that way) is particularly charming.

Sheepskin in English, Chris. I believe in the trenches they called them "Stinkers", due to their fragrant bouquet, especially if you got them wet.

Wow you are an amazing painter and fast!!!

So the Highlanders wore two different colored kilts in WW1?

The first fellow is wearing a khaki apron over his kilt. This was very common during the Great War. The normal kilt of regimental tartan would be underneath it. Confusingly, some units, particularly Scottish-Canadian ones, had khaki kilts due to high demand for tartan making them somewhat scarce. You can tell that chap has an apron rather than a khaki kilt as he has the little pocket on the front.

I don't know what that purplish grey is supposed to be, I've seen it on the Great War minis site and in the Warhammer Great War book, but I'm not familiar with it.The London Scottish perhaps? They had plain kilts of a colour called 'Hodden Grey' though I have no idea what exact colour that actually refers to.

Anybody know what the purple-grey is? I don't know an awful lot about Highlanders.

WOW ! What a rate !
Did you steal Prof's Magic potion for Teutonic Efficiency [TM] during your week-end ?  ;)

And I'm a bit sad to see such Tommies : does this mean you give up the FIW ? Do you really prefer trenches to the wonderful forests of the Ohio Valley ?

He had the choice to give me his mojo or his efficiency..you see his decision!
I paint this Brits because I´m very impressed by the Great War Rulebook (not by the rules but all these pics  :-* ).
BUT of course I don´t change trench for forest. So you´ll see more FIW in the future.

Thanks for all your comments, No. 4 is on his way..
