British Army Deployments 1896
« on: 26 July 2014, 06:46:29 PM »
For some years a man called George Nafziger researched and published OOBs throuh his website.

Having reached the point where he didn't want to do it any more, he donated his entire archive to the US Army Combined arms centre, on condition they were available free of charge to anyone who wanted to download them (PDF Format). The main page is here - http://www.cgsc.edu/carl/nafziger.asp and the listing page is here - http://www.cgsc.edu/CARL/nafziger/index.asp

That's fine but he used a code to list them ....

The 3 numbers = the year so 809 is 1809 etc.
The first letter is the country G for Great Britain, F for France etc

The actual deployment of the British army in 1895 895GAA, and 1896 896GAA

Hope this is useful.

Hi

Ah, there isn't a full army one for 1895, but there is for 1894  ::)

http://www.cgsc.edu/CARL/nafziger/894GAA.pdf

All the ones for 1895 are local garrisons

I got mixed up with my cut and past  ;D

I think one of the things that surprised me was the sheer number of troops in the London/Windsor/Aldershot area  ;D

The Nafziger Works are amazing, I bought some of his material back in the late 90's & still treasure it.

W'ton Barr = Wellington Barracks, a relatively new Army establishment for this time, just a few hundred yards from Buckingham Palace - and it's remained the Foot Guards haunt up to this day.

Anyway, crucial aspect of these lists is the month - July. This would coincide with the annual Army Summer Camp, and while the facilities at the time around Aldershot Town, Aldershot Heath and Chobham Common were extensive and improving every year, there are still a lot of units listed. So that's why so many units are mentioned.
