Help needed with WWWII Russians
« on: 06 August 2008, 10:00:11 PM »
Ok, I've decided that my next side project will be some WWWII figures. I want to go for Soviets to start with, so someone give me a comparison on figure sizes for any the following ranges:

SOTR
Darkson Designs
Copplestone Neo-Sovs
Artizan
Black Tree WW2
any other useful ranges I have forgotten

Also some pics of the the SOTR Russian infantry would be nice, as the box art pics on the Westwind website are not very good.

Ha....tempted into Weird War....

SOTR tend to be quite big but fit in really well with Artizan. I've only got some Thrilling Tales Cossacks to compare but they look good with SOTR.
Black-tree are smaller but they have a sale on at the moment and so are good value!
I would have thought the Copplestone stuff would mix OK with Artizan and SOTR as I 've got quite a lot of their Future Wars stuff.
Darkson designs are very slight in build. They have a charm of their own but do not mix well with other ranges!

Here's a quick pic of SOTR, Artizan and Black-tree.

You can see that the Black-tree mini is quite a bit smaller. If you mixed up units I suppose it wouldn't be a huge issue.
Westwind sell the Berlin or Bust range but the OLDER figures are small compared to their new stuff.

Hope that's of some help.

Regarding the BTD one being smaller, are you sure it's not just the thickness (sp?) of the base?

I have SOTR, BTD, TAG and BAM at home, so can make a comparison shot with those over the weekend if desired.

Darkson Designs don't mix well at all (except for the non-humans).

I used to have the Copplestone Neo-sovs. If memory serves they were big, but not so much as not to mix. Weapons may be too modern looking for WW2 though (kinda like old GW Walhallans).

A comparison photo would be great.

Regarding the Copplestone Neo-Sovs - I'm I two minds about these. The weapons are fine for me - they are basically AK47's with drum mags. Remember the AK47 was developed from captured German assault rifles, so these are perfect for an extended WW2 background. I can also easily convert Assault Group modern weapons in my bits box to match if I want to add rifles to the heavy weapons troops or convert figures from orher manufacturers. I also like the fact that there are a couple of figures with anti-tank weapons - once again, post-war RPG and LAW varients were developed from original WW2 German designs. On the negative side, the Copplestone figures look too 'clean' and well-clothed - I would certainly have to do head-swops on some figures (with SOTR heads?) and possibly change some of the clothing (e.g. give some figures padded jackets) to get a more 'campaign ' appearance.

If I don't use Copplestone I will go for SOTR as my core infantry. Does anyone make compatible 28mm Soviet figures with captured panzerfausts?

Well, BAM sells (or used to anyway, I haven't checked the site) separate weapon packs, including a pack of panzerfausts, so should be easy conversions if you want to add them to Russian minis.

No Comparison pics but I have painted the Copplestone Neo-Sovs.  I no longer have the figures but from memory the height would be OK but they are "chunky."  But then, they are wearing "chunky" clothes.

Link to Painted Figures.

From the Armouted Falschirmjager thread:

or check out this link to the http://secretsofthethirdreich.com/forums/index.php?topic=694.30, shows some british armoured sout with a boys AT rifle, ^_^

I love the Soviet command figures, so I think that settles it - my initial force will be a platoon of SOTR Soviets. However, a comparrison photo of other ranges would still be useful, as I will still need to add LMGs, flamethrowers, etc.

Left to right: BTD - SOTR - BAM - TAG

The shortest of the bunch is the TAG one, who really is a couple mm behind the rest, but still doesn't look "out of scale" IMO.

BAM has one in the pack with the bomb dog (you know you also need a bomb dog  ;)).

Thanks for the photos White Knight. I will look amongst those ranges for the bits I need to give my platoon some anti-mech/zombie capability
