Across a Deadly Field ACW Rules
« on: August 01, 2014, 10:00:17 AM »
As you probably know, these are new rules written by John Hill (he of Johnny Reb and Squad Leader fame) that are going to be published by Osprey on 20th of August for £27.99 but it seems someone at Amazon has made a booboo as they are selling the Kindle version already for £6.79...

I noticed this earlier this morning and being a parsimonious Emir (the fortress roof is always in need of repair and the lion kennels just drain gold!), I bought it!!

I can't comment on the actual rules themselves yet, but on kindle its a well put together, bright, well illustrated book with plenty of eye candy in the form of both photographs of mini's in action and prints from osprey series titles. It will be nice read for my train journey to Claymore tomorrow. It looks fairly dense and detailed.

I've seen these rules for sale but I was reluctant to purchase them as I'm not keen on the small unit sizes.  Has anyone had a read or played any games using them? I'd be keen to read any thoughts.

There are reviews of ADF in Wargames Illustrated and ACW Gamer: The Ezine. Additionally, Cigarboxbattle.com has posted an article on first impressions of ADF.

One of my friends is/has written a review for Miniature Wargames and I got to play a game before the rules were published as part of his review study.

I liked the mechanisms, it played well and 'realistically' but we played the game in 10mm and the units just didn't feel like a regiment etc. That would be my only foible with the rules.

As I say, they played very well and gave a satisfying game.

Darrell.

I don't like the fact that 12 figures represent an entire regiment. We play 28mm and that just looks silly. We'll stick to Black Powder

If the rulebook is good, I´m thinking about to put more figures to represent (visually) the regiment.

General Lee,

Did you see the Black Powder Unofficial ACW adaption by Jorge Rodriguez Jr in ACW Gamer Issue 1?

To be honest...I haven't read (and don't own) he Black Powder rules to make an accurate assessment.

A young man did use them at a Con I attended in March and them seem to do well.

I'm a bit skeptical of rules that are similar to Johnny Reb.  I played several Johnny Reb (I & III) games, and it just seems too chart/table intensive...almost like a Napoleonic game. I like the regimental level game like the original "Rally 'round the Flag".  I bought the "Longstreet" deal, and that was ok.  Will monitor the progress of this rule set and see how it plays out...no pun intended.
