today me and my dad had a quick trial run of 'Across a deadly field'
the scenario we chose for the first time was Mcpherson Ridge which was an engagement on the first day of gettysburg,
between MG john f reynolds 1st corps and Heths division of the 3rd corps (army of northern virginia).
we got the scenario from issue 10 of ACW Gamer magazine which is easy and cheap to download.
http://www.acwgamer.com/We managed to complete 7 turns before coming to the conclusion that the game was going the same way as history and the CSA had no chance of taking the ridge. it was thoroughly enjoyable and as for the rules set, once you get into the routine of which charts to use and when (theres alot of them) it can be played reasonably quickly. we thought they were pretty realistic. you wouldnt get anywhere by charging bigger units that were defending fence lines unless you built up your number of regiments and attacked all at once. and even when you think your done for, the dice have other ideas and persuade you to have another go.

the artillery was pretty deadly once we worked them out. you have to remember to add on the dice modifiers and plus/minuses to the attacks.
all in all i cant wait to have another go.
the figures apart from a few commanders and few older figures are all from the perrys battle in a box. including one of the farm houses and the snake fencing.
the board wasnt done to the best of our abilities we just wanted a quick game.
