Escape from Monster Island - Epic Scale Disaster
« on: August 06, 2014, 10:00:27 AM »
Time to start a new project, never mind the four or five currently in hand.

Ages back I purchased an almost-new copy of Monster Island and Escape from Monster Island, by Firefly Games. The first is a clash of Kaiju; the second has the Kaiju stomp a city. My new project would comprise both scenarios.

Components:
1) Gaming surface - large-ish, should include buildings which are not stuck in place. I usually dislike the latter approach, but am going for a stylised approach with an architect's model sort of city. Which will be pleasantbright, or whatever the antonym of grimdark is  :D
Tall order - it also has to resist high levels of damp, as it will live in our dark, dank cellar, which could easily feature in a dungeon raid as a lair of mosquitoes and dark moths. If I were to place a sheet of hardboard in it I'd have a nice if irregular field in a week, basing on 6mm scale. Pity it would be almost black, tend to brush off onto anything and a bit smelly, ideal for Nurgle but little else.
Given that it's a long sort of board, I might isolate one end with an 'ocean', and use that as a sort of kaiju island, with the 'ocean' between it and the city out of scale of course.

2) Force 1 - an army. Not quite based on historical models, as I'm using what 6mm scale stuff I have available. Some already painted. Will include flyers and tanks and APCs, and suits - old school 40K Epic scale dreads and dredds (before they were kans) as they don't look too imperial/orky. And a couple of mechs.

3) Force 2 - the kaiju - I'll use some Epic Nids as an army of smallish beasties, but I need to ID the actual kaiju, ideally from the stuff stored in the same cellar.

4) Odds and ends. I definitely want to have a superhero or two. And maybe some aliens. In fact I should have a handful of martian tripods of the right scale somewhere.......

Meanwhile, I have to proceed with the many-worlds project, my new red armies (painted red, not Soviet) project and a small force of Skaven.
Wonder how long before this falls through... ;D

Pics.

Here is the view of the board in the cellar which will be used for the city and island.

It's a bit precarious - the boxes are unpainted model storage, an old door supports the ceramic floor tiles which make up the surface - possibly the heaviest small gaming table ever!

The old scenery, used for fantasy or sci fi - it's all stone and resistant to damp!

The future new scenery bits:

A view of the cellar itself:

And some other contents  ;D :

I had been assembling a few bits of terrain - around 40 items - and to try to avoid spray can nozzle clogging problems (I had found a solution, but now cannot find the right brand of nail polish remover!), I wanted to spray all the items of one particular colour basecoat together - around 25 items. I spread a plastic sheet on the roof to protect it, and spread the bits and pieces all round.

Disaster! The thin sheet billowed and blew all over the place in the very light breeze. and although some of the heaver bits came through ok, the lighter ones ended up sticking to the sheet. I almost finished the spry can, the nozzle looks set to be clogged, and several bits ended up with damaged paint. Argh. Never underestimate even the lightest breeze.

The luckier bits have now gone to the 'finishing shop'; the others will have to be cleaned up and (stroke of genius) go back to the roof for the second shade of a new two-tone base-coat  :D

Using a different sort of protection for the roof, this time.
Next up: (probably) me repainting the roof where the spray got under the 'improved' protection...
