Scratch built boat
« on: 18 August 2014, 05:56:34 PM »
A few of us at Wigan Wargames are going to run a series  of WW1 in Africa games. We wanted to link a few games together and so came up with the idea of having a river based expedition  which had a variety of different games as the flotilla made its way up river. This was inspired by Chris Peers article in W.I. around a similar Darkest Africa campaign. Anyway a flotilla needs boats and so I set about making a modest contribution. I always quite liked the idea of converted small commercial/fishing  vessels - also  I didn't want to make too big a ship as I'm going to be donating it to the allies to use against my Germans!
Here are some pictures of my scratch building efforts.
I'll post up some more pictures of the boat finished & painted later this week.

I'm looking forward to seeing more. But you've reminded deck gun! It'd slipped out of mind.(it didn't have a difficult exit nothing there to stop it) I haven't made the things yet .
Converted fishing boat is the right way to go.It will work for Pulp,Vbcw,WW2 .without looking dated or out of place.

Juergen thanks for that,  I was looking for the 'conscripted, converted, civillian craft fighting the wars of the great powers in the back of beyond' look.
Below are the pix of the finished boat. The figure in the last picture is a Tiger Miniature German WW1 marine. It is a large scale 28mm (nearer 30mm) so it gives an idea of scale.

Very nice work, both the build and painting.

Thanks for your kind words, the hull is from Magnetic Displays
TH52 - 28mm Boat with accessories (mast, folded sail, anchor, crates etc) Painted or Unpainted.
It is only £6 unpainted. One thing to note is that as it comes the depth inside is the same as the hight of the hull you can see on the outside. You'll note that the 30mm figure wouldn't be able to see over the prow unless you put some sort of decking on. This was why I platicarded my own decking & fitted it near the top of the hull. It gives the impression of a deep hold for transport/stowage. Its a bit fiddly but at £6 you can't really complain.
