Stepehen welcome to this thread..
thanks to Gringo and his work of love , a period which is one of my first wargame loves (I'm Italian) has come to light among our wargame community....i noticed that you mentioned Trevelyan and i can add also D Mac Smith which unfortunatly we are recently missing...it's funny because everything i read from those 2 British authors is greatly better than everything written concerning this period by Italian ones..from a general researcher point of view and also from a military point of view...our narrative is, practically always, written in a clumsy way and celebrative..so practical useless ...above all with no idea of cross reference research trough various opposing or better foreign sources...i detected the same thing for other periods of history like the Roman one which is also one my favourite...Gibson and US rearcher  Lutwak works on Roman Empire are unreachable by our amatorial italian supposed to be professorial historians

Thanks Ital Wars  Mack Smith's books Cavour and Cavour and Garibaldi are fantastic pieces of scholarly research and insightful on the complexity and tensions between the  'head and heart' of  unification.  but  for me Trevelyan's books are exciting and though (I feel) uncritical they capture the passion of the underpinning the Risorgimento.  As your English is clearly much better than my Italian I cannot comment on the quality of Italian scholarship, though Carlo Ginzburg's    Il formaggio e i vermi is one of the finest and original historical works I have ever read.

with D Mack Smith typical British narrative style which'snt really appreciated by our self appointed academic clique of bigots  we can learn many things that our italian history books do not mention at all
yes i read part of Ginzburg work ..very well done ..the study of popular culture in Italy....i like what we call here "regionalism"
also his studies  about Hobbes are excellent
he has also teached/studied  in UK if i'm not wrong...so also if belonging to those battaillons of leftist intellectuals paid by government for spreading their cultural one way only dikat i must admit that i appreciate him.

...as concern Osprey is always interesting and curious to see purposly made colour plates on the military subject that we love but about Risorgimento above all concerning the Campaigns in the South ..between Gringo special guides, Gringo 's and various other poster's contributions  you already have in this very thread a comprehensive guide on how to paint the minis
