Ged those are excellent figures   :-*

Hmm I have a family connection with Garibaldi ( the man not the biscuit) Whilst I'm not sure I can see myself getting into yet another period, I would love a miniature of the man himself and one of Anna his wife.
Em dezembro de '81
Botou os ingleses na roda
3 a 0 no Liverpool
Ficou marcado na história
E no Rio não tem outro igual
Só o Flamengo é campeão mundial
E agora seu povo
Pede o mundo de novo

I'll see what I can find picture wise.

Family connection is that my great-great grandfather took him back to Italy, according to family legend.

Ana is more famous than Giuseppe in Brazil btw. There's hardly a city of any size that doesn't have one street named after her. her wiki has a nice portrait of her in later life and a photo of her in Italy in drag.

I believe in the case of my forebear it was far more likely to have been a matter of pure commerce. I'm somewhat more intrigued by his visits to South America. As I understand it he shipped manufactured goods and slate to Valparaiso and all stations in between. I keep wondering if I will one day run into some distant cousin be it in Chile or Brazil.

she was quite a beauty it seems from the picture...brave to a fault
and by all accounts quite a handful to deal with....
He appears to have been smitten by her and remained loyal
till the last................

you never know who you bump into in this world from your
distant ancestoral past! The South American side fascinates me
I await the New book on the subject from Germany...with
great interest!

I am italian, so at school we studied Garibaldi and have some news about his period in South America ... 20 years ago, a friend of my sister, who is from South America (she is a dentist and studied there at university) told us that, in Ecuador, she never studied at school about Garibaldi!

That's probably because they're fucking obsessed with Bolivar, well all their near neighbours are.  History consists of the Spanish conquistadores belting the locals, old Simon kicking them out and whatever happened last Wednesday. Such is the ubiquity of the Liberator and his likeness that after about three weeks in Colombia  I found myself pointing at his statue in and asking the locals "Who is that?"  ;)

The Argentines have a similar fetish for San Martin. National heroes tend to be a bit more diffuse in Brazil, Osorio and chums from the Guerra do Paraguai are common subjects for civic monuments. My personal favourite though is Maria Quitéria, heroine of Bahian independence. In Bahia there are two independence days and 2 July is seen as much more important than the national version on 7 Sept.

Pierriebi

that's interesting I would have thought he would be of some
importance to the Equadorians.......! Still im happy he is well considered
in Italy as he deserves to be. :D

I want to tackle the Army of Piedmont.......even if just to do a decent
figure of the King....!

Chaps

a general request please..although I have a fair amount of "uniform" information I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right
direction bookwise...im sure Carlos has this at his fingertips!
the New book on the subject is en route to me ..I believe this
is pretty good on the uniforms and narrates the "Exotic Apprenticeship
" with some verve!

cheers
