I am italian, so at school we studied Garibaldi and have some news about his period in South America ... 20 years ago, a friend of my sister, who is from South America (she is a dentist and studied there at university) told us that, in Ecuador, she never studied at school about Garibaldi!
That's probably because they're fucking obsessed with Bolivar, well all their near neighbours are. History consists of the Spanish conquistadores belting the locals, old Simon kicking them out and whatever happened last Wednesday. Such is the ubiquity of the Liberator and his likeness that after about three weeks in Colombia I found myself pointing at his statue in and asking the locals "Who is that?"

The Argentines have a similar fetish for San Martin. National heroes tend to be a bit more diffuse in Brazil, Osorio and chums from the Guerra do Paraguai are common subjects for civic monuments. My personal favourite though is Maria Quitéria, heroine of Bahian independence. In Bahia there are two independence days and 2 July is seen as much more important than the national version on 7 Sept.
