Just spent the morning visiting this little museum http://www.museodellarepubblicaromana.it/ It has a fantastic 15mm diorama of the battle for Porta San Pancrazio with hundreds of figures (on a 1/2 scale...) Highly recommended, if you are in Rome it is definitely worth a visit

Ged, I was at a conference at the American Academy which is just next to it, and they hosted me at this fantastic place which is now Villa Aurelia and was Villa Savorelli at the time of the Repubblica romana. It hosted Garibaldi's HQ during the siege so I might have slept in his room!

The whole area is a must for a Garibadini fan. Statues of the General and Anita, the museum, etc. Even the little bar across the street had a number of garibaldini memorabilia!

The Museum is not that big, you can see it comfortably in about one hour even by reading carefully all the captions under the uniforms (there is even one pistol form the American was of independence, belonging to one of the Garibaldini officers!) and watching the two videos - one tells the story of Ciceruacchio and the other the story of the siege and the main battles - with lights and arrows on a vast map. And the view from the Gianicolo hill is spectacular. I only took some photos of the Villa and the view, unfortunately - not of the museum.

The bookstore is small and somewhat disappointing. It has some books on some relatively connected topics, but you would expect a full bookshelf on the Roman republic - instead you find a volume on Ricciotti Garibaldi, another one on the general history of the Risorgimento, and so on. Very odd. But the diorama of the siege is great  and a wargamer's delight, which is not a surprise as one of its authors is Ugo Barlozzetti, a long time wargamer and  animator of the wargame scene in Florence

And this one of course...

I do not know about a general guide but I just googled Museo Garibaldi and I got a nice map with all sorts of little red spots - some of which are totally irrelevant but about ten or so are related to our guys - in MIlan, in Mentana (of course), in Caprera (of course again..)
