15mm scifi modular buildings
« on: September 16, 2014, 08:52:40 AM »
Hi everyone!

I already posted some pictures of this project in another thread, but i thought that it's now time to open a proper thread for this.

Basically, the idea is to build some small building blocks with sockets for windows and doors. The bodies will be done in plaster, the detailing in resin, with several variants to give more variety. The blocks are meant to be glued together in clusters, creating buildings for 15mm skirmishing. I sculpted a couple of blocks already (although they are just tests, the final ones will be more "fine" in their cracks) and a ladder and some terraced (embankment) walls so far:

first the blocks: I've added a few resin bits temporarly, but i'm going to sculpt (mainly with 3D) many more:

two of them together, they already have a "building" feeling...

now with some minis to scale: Khurasan troops and a Resina Planet robot-spider (sculpted by me!)

For the embankment, that's the ladder (still requires detailing!)

and here's "in action"

I will keep you updated, and i will do the same on my facebook page!

any comment and question is welcome!

cheers
Jack

Very nice! Don't make the cracks too fine, I think on smaller models you need bold details.
"I'd like to send this letter to the Prussian consulate in Siam by aeromail. Am I too late for the 4:30 autogyro?"
"Uh, I better look in the manual... This book must be out of date. I don't see "Prussia", "Siam" or "autogyro"...

Very nice.  Will these be available somewhere?

Thanks my friend! PM me whenever you like!

You're right, i won't. But still, i'd like to have cracks that are a bit more defined. I scribed them when the plaster was not 100% set, and the edges are a tad too soft for a good result with the paint on!

Very nice.  Will these be available somewhere?

I'm now chatting about that with Clear Horizon miniatures, but nothing is decided and they might be taken by someone else! :) But i got a good feedback on facebook, i'm confident that someone will grab those! :)

Thanks!

I started with a few panels for the floor tiles and the terracing edges (as an alternative to the small ones in the picture above), i still have to do all the scratching:

Meanwhile, i did some scratching to the first 12 walls-tiles-whatever:

One of your best ideas yet, O Lazy One. I think this is the first thing to come along for 15mm that has interested me in a very loooong time.

This will compliment very nicely the Ground Zero Games Shanty Town and Pre-Fab buildings.

That's a great idea.  You can really give the impression of a building with a few highly detailed parts placed on relatively simple shapes.

Thanks everyone! I've done a bit of scratching on the floor tiles, i'm not sure if the effect is the right one though...

28mm has many issues, mainly the volume compared to 15mm is around 8 times larger! That means that casting the parts is generally too expensive unless you split them in "faces", but this requires more sculpting time AND more silicon, which is turning me off since i can't invest much in that.

I'd love to find someone commissioning me a whole set in 28mm, but for now i'm pretty busy with the projects and commission i've got, and this 15mm project is less intensive for me rather than a 28mm one!

Meanwhile, using the componets shown above (and some newly sculpt ones) i've build this.

It's still WIP since i've to do the washes and the weathering, but still it gives an idea...

cheers!
