Napoleonic skirmish
« on: September 18, 2014, 03:18:15 PM »
Hello,

as a big fan of sharpe's rifles I want to skirmish napoleonics. Now I look for the real skirmish rules. These are the altenatives for it:
  • Sharp practice: very unorganized written, needs a lot of Miniatures (40-120). Does anyone made a good overview of the rules. Needs urgently a overworked 2nd Edition in my opinion
  • Songs of ...: Not really my cup of beer. The system is not exciting.
  • Donnybrook: My favorite, but no rules for the napo-era. Anyone who made something for it. Any ideas
  • Musket&tomahawks: Also a good one, but no rules for the napo-era. Anyone who made somthing for it???
  • Triumph and tragedy: Yes, really great, but no specific rules. Anyone????
Are there some other system or ideas for me????

The author of Donnybrook says the only changes he makes for Napoleonics is that muskets and carbines are no longer move or fire weapons, rifles are move or fire weapons with a range of 30" and a +1 to hit. Otherwise he plays the rules as they are written. I use the rules with the adjustments when skirmishing my Sikh Wars collection and they work fine for me.

I haven't used the lists I normally get a scenario in my head or from one of the numerous scenario books out there and I work out the forces and have at it. I'm not very points orientated I sometimes play games where one side cannot possibly win in the conventional sense. I have the Sikh Wars scenario book from Skirmish Wargames which was written with TSATF in mind but transfers over to Donnybrook no problem.
I do however use special characters such as Officers, musicians, standard bearers and Sergeants as they are portrayed in the rule book.
Are you aware of the "Fighting Talk" forum on the League of Augsburgs site?

Hi, what skirmish scale are you looking at? 4-5 minis, 5-20 or 20+? For up to 20 minis I enjoy Brink of Battle, I also recommend musket and tomahawks, which with a few mods can work but is for 40+ minis.

Dirk, if you get a chance to play our LLA rules at BLAM I'm sure a nappy version would be on the cards  :)

Greetings;
I own Battlefield Game Designs and have written a rule set which is exactly what you are looking for. It is called Green Jackets and Voltigeurs and includes 25 scenarios for our intrepid hero and cast. It is also a PELA Award winner at Historicon. Check out my website:

I look forward to hearing back from you with any questions that you might have.

Not my kind of game. Don't like the engine. But thank you.

Something i found a while back on freewargamesrules:

http://napoleonicstrategybattlegame.yolasite.com/

It's an adaptation of the lord of the rings strategy game. Would be great for casual fun games! (you'll have to decide for yourself if there is enough period flavour in them for your taste!)

I have been looking for the same thing. I actually really like sharp practice, but it requires way too many figures. I also don't care for the Ganesha rules for the same reasons you state, and I haven't looked at Donnybrook. My favorite system at this scale that would fit is Muskets and Tomahawks--which you've already mentioned.

There was a rule set called Shakos and Bayonets thats supposed to be,  as I understand it, a modification of M&T. It was supposed to be released by studio tomahawk, but I seriously doubt it will ever see the light of day as gripping beast has no figures for it and the Studio Tomahawk guys are preoccupied with Saga.

I think it would be super easy, however, to come up with an M&T variant oneself. The only thing you would really need to do is to vary the army lists and the mechanics could stay exactly the same as they are now. I have been thinking about doing this for the Retreat from Moscow using the Perry figures. I would just need some rules for the sledges, famine, and snow! The cossacks could just be Mounted Indians ;-)

Maybe I'll jot down some ideas and start another thread...

Steve

I think you are right with the Musket&Tomahawk-idea. No interest at Gripping Beast. I did not play it enough to make lists.
But you mentioned Sharps Practice: I never really found into the rules. Confusing written, not a line in it, more ideas putted together.
So I think I will use Donnybrook. Card driven like Sharpes Practice and easy to adapt for the napoleonic era.
