Napoleonic skirmish rules for about 12 figures per side?
« on: September 04, 2016, 11:44:01 AM »
Hi folks

Just wondering about doing some Napoleonic skirmishing in 28mm. I had my hopes pinned firmly on Sharp Practice 2 but sadly that requires a rather higher model count than I want to do. I'm sort of thinking that a force would be a pack of command and a pack of troopers from Perry for instance?

Your thoughts much appreciated.

Cheers

You could try Flintloque - a fantasy set but if you just substitute "British" for Orc and "French" for the elves you should be ok.
From memory Russians are undead, Portuguese are goblins, Prussians are dwarves, Austrians are dogs? There may have been others, but it's a few years since I played.
The original starter sets had roughly that number of figures, we used to play using historical figures because we didn't have many "official" figures.

There were a few Flintloque threads on the forum in the past, you might find them with a search (which may get you to someone who has played more recently).

Also, Alternative Armies have a free PDF of "Flintloque Light" so you could try it for free.

p.s. where are you based?
Gary, Glynis, and Alasdair (there are three of us, but we are too mean to have more than one login)

"Smooth & Rifled" from the guys behind Impetus.

Single based figures and designed to scale from 9 or 10 models per side up to 40 or 50.

http://www.wargamevault.com/product/137231/SmoothRifled?manufacturers_id=6467

Rulebook has basic stats/organisations for the period but there are free expansions with more specific detail for Peninsular War, ACW, French Indian Wars, Darkest Africa, Boshin War and many others.

I like Song of Drums and Shako's. Can as easily be played with a few models to a dozen or more.

Fastolfrus: Flintloque is the sort of thing I was after but I find it a bit 'clunky' compared to 'modern' rules. It certainly has the sort of detail I was after though! I'm located in deepest, darkest, Wettest (Wild) West Wales!

robh: I will look for AARs and the like to get the feel of S&R.

Matakishi/Paul: Aaaargh! Still recovering from the lovely stuff on your website! You, Sir, are an inspiration. And your rules are at a very attractive price position!

Aerendar: I wasn't blown away by the look of S&D&H forces with 2 line troopers a Guard Grenadier and a Cuirassier so I sort of forgot about it completely. I will look for AARs and reviews to get more information.

Not be confused with a recently published, similarly named set from Partizan Press, whose authors, I assume, also deem it to be at or close to the pinnacle of rules design...

I suspect that Paul's pricing point will beat Partizan's by a long mile!

I would second Songs of Drums and Shakos. I have used it and it is perfect for what you want. I stated with SoDS but over that last year or two have added so many new figures I have enough for SP2. SoDS is a great place to start playing Nap Skirmish.
Theres more 28mm Superhero Madness at my blog, http://fourcoloursupers.blogspot.com/
And for Ultra-modern Wargaming check out Hotel Zugando at http://ultramoderngaming.blogspot.co.uk/

Indeed. It's also far and away more suitable for skirmishes, albeit not for big battalions.

Thanks for that Hitman, but $65 is more than my budget for the whole project not just the rules!

I second "Songs of Drums and Shakos".
If you don't like the circus aproach: one Cuirassier, one Old Guard, one Voltigeur...then pick your models with some historical sense.

Here are my brits for example.

Later I added one light dragoon for a little bit variety, but I had some fun games with these...;)

Cheers,
Don

I really like Brink of Battle. It is an awesome skirmish game..

with it I play :

Dark Ages, Fantasy, Japanese sengoku or fantasy ( legend of the five rings )

napoleonics, french and indian war

steam punk

world war II, falklands..

Each period is very well characterized and feels very different. You have to do your own stats for the figures you have so it is up to you on that..

I love the rules, they are solid, and thorough, they include campaign advancement and always results in fun games of 8-20 figures per side..

Here some pics from a napoleonic game I did recently

https://www.facebook.com/groups/276411602433983/permalink/871899956218475/

In that game both forces were investigating three possible objectives and once the correct one was found they had to exit with it...

Rules:  http://www.brinkofbattle.com/

That being said, I had not heard of the earlier "Over the Hills..." and being a sucker for napoleonic rules I will try to get a copy soon :) ... Most of the time I default back to Brink of Battle for the skirmish games but there is always valuable material that can be extrapolated in dedicated rules... so thanks for posting that reference Matakishi

cheers
Francisco

Then Osprey's Chosen Men comes out in December: https://www.amazon.com/Chosen-Men-Military-Skirmish-Napoleonic/dp/1472810805

Looks very promising and the author is the one who did the Warhammer Historical: Legends of the Old West. Our group modified that series into a large scale Indian Mutiny skirmish game. It'll be nice to not have to monk with it too much.
"One of My Men Became Restless" focuses on 15mm Horse & Musket periods and 25mm Horse & Musket, Fantasy, Horror and Victorian everything! Occasionally there'll be stuff of related interest but it's mostly a painters blog.  See it all here: http://flashman14.blogspot.com/
