A question of scale
« on: 02 October 2014, 08:05:55 AM »
As the question states above, which is your personal preference for a true scale to go with 28mm gaming (the period is modern onwards to the future)?

I don't want the debate about which scale 28mm is supposed to be as that will just go round in circles and get us nowhere, I'm happy to go with just people's preferences  :)

cheers

James

I chose 1:42 because it's closest to 1:43.
"I'd like to send this letter to the Prussian consulate in Siam by aeromail. Am I too late for the 4:30 autogyro?"
"Uh, I better look in the manual... This book must be out of date. I don't see "Prussia", "Siam" or "autogyro"...

Yes, I saw that after posting. It was supposed to be 1:43 (stupid large thumbs on a tiny iPhone screen  :? ).

cheers

Not sure what to vote for really, as I use multiple scales - 1:43 for die-cast vehicles definitely, but 1:48 when ordering architectural components from model suppliers, and sometimes even 1:56...  lol

Basically, whatever I can get my hands on that looks right next to my minis!

Same here; out of neccesity, I buy just about anything that fits.

But when it comes to my preferred scale, especially for buildings, I go with 1/50.

Why? because many of my vehicles are 1/43 (due to availablility), but 28mm miniatures are roughly 1/56 scale. This puts the scenery inbetween the two scales, tying them together (just like the rug and the room really :D ).

And then there's the fact that we've seen scale creep in many miniature lines over the years, making many of them closer to 30mm of late, and of course the bases; a 1/56 scale miniature on 1/56 scale scenery will look out of place because the base makes it look a whopping 28cm taller (in scale), so woefully out of place.

Then there's the door openings, which will be way too narrow at 1/56 for the standard 25mm bases most of us use (although  admittedly, they're still too narrow in 1/50 ;) ).

And finally; the scale is particularly easy to work with; 1 meter in real life is 2 centimeters on the table, reducing the math required when calculating scales...

I believe Antenocity had a really good article on their site regarding gaming scales, and how our eyes deceive us. Excellent reading, increasing our understanding of what works on the table and what not, but I can't seem to find it right now...  :?
Miniatures you say? Well I too, like to live dangerously...

1/50 always seems to fit well with figures. 1/48 always looks a bit big and 1/56 looks a bit small.

1:50 for pretty much the exact reasons Daeothor gives. I tend to shy away from most 1:43 cars as usually they just look massive. I like my 1:50 Corgi WWII and Vietnam stuff.

I voted 1/48 but could just have easily selected 1/50 as I use both scales interchangeably.

I use several 1/48 Tamiya, Airfix & similar WW2 and modern vehicle kits. I also have several 1/50 Corgi diecast vehicles.
I use the vehicles unbased.

I find both of these look better than 1/56 vehicles when compared with larger 28mm figures on GW slottabases.

I like the Tamiya 1/48 kits.

Firstly: 28mm Figures tend to have a bit of girth, and a lot of 'junk in the trunk'. The larger 1/48 seats in vehicles accommodate it more naturally than the 1/56's seats.
Secondly: Base height adds to the scale needed to 'look right', so the bigger 1/48's work for me unbased. I find the cheap toy 1/43 cars ginormous though, and totally unserviceable.

Cheers
Matt

I find the seats and steering wheels in most 1/43 cars still too tiny compared to modern 28mm figs. When I hold them side by side I think "that guy should fit in there? no way!". Well... the endless discussion.

I go with 1/56 to 1/50, occasionally 1/48 detail pieces. Even with the high bases 1/43 just seem too large to me.

All to often when gamers are concerned I find that true of 1800mm cars as well.

1/50 for trucks and tanks if possible, 1/48 if I have to.
1/60 for modern cars where I can

Off the top of my head, I can think of things I use that range from 1:35 to 1:100.  Few of them are used strictly as the manufacturer intended.  Counting only things I use as just what they were made to represent, the range is a bit tighter- probably 1:43 to 1:60.

If you're asking about scale, does that mean you're going to produce something.....juicy, that we'll ALL want to buy? Go on, spill the beans!!!
