Hills for the battlefield
« on: October 07, 2014, 03:07:02 PM »
I ran a game of BattleTech: Alpha Strike at the Recruits Convention in Lee's Summit, MO a few weeks ago.  As I was preparing for the game, I realized I was missing a necessary staple in my terrain collection; hills.  I normally play at my local game store (Gauntlet Games in Lincoln, NE) and use their awesome supply of terrain for my games.  However, since I was going to be running the game at a convention, I needed to take everything I needed with me and I had no hills.  (I actually have some hills, but they don't look great and I this was a good excuse to improve my collection.)

So I set out to put together a good supply of hills.  I used pink foam and caulk as the core of all the hills.  After adding some paint and flock, the hills turned out pretty nicely.

I wrote up a tutorial and posted it on my blog.  http://gamingandshooting.blogspot.com/2014/10/hills-for-battlefield.html

These were made specifically for BattleTech: Alpha Strike, but will easily work for many other games.

The winning player isn't always the better player.

Oldskool, well done and efficient, although I'd hazard a guess they'd look a spot nicer on a green basecloth rather than the ochre one. Also, really nice to see hexless Battletech - we had a blast with a campaign back in '05-'06, much faster and tenser than the original.

My green mat didn't get into my bag so I had to make due at the con with a borrowed mat.  I think the Alpha Strike rules are a great addition to the BT universe.  They allow you to actually play games with many models per side in a reasonable amount of time.

I like the completely vertical cliff faces.  I find there's far less of a temptation for people to try to toe the edge and have their models slide or fall off.

They look great all over the table as well.

Simple and effective.  Not a giant fan of the felt rivers/lakes, but what can you do?  Looks simple and much easier to determine line of sight.  Well done.
