Steam Wagon
« on: 08 October 2014, 08:10:06 PM »
Another project too long in the making, a steam wagon of war. The wagon is the chuck wagon toy from the animated Atlantis movie. This wasn't a popular toy and they eventually were sold for dime on the dollar prices. The driver is a 25mm Dixon Old West fig, the gunner is an Old Glory 25mm from their Span/Am line. I took the chuck wagon apart, removed all the electronics, the two half figs of the trail cook and the on switch. I added a gun platform made from the lid of a small paper mache' box ( that warped from heat and humidity in storage)and added a smoke stack made from the barrel of an ink pen. The gatling is from the Deadlands line and is on a scratch built pintle mount.

This is what the chuck wagon looked like before I modified and painted it. When the price on the toy fell to a couple of bucks I bought 2 or 3 of them.

I like it! It has a very old west, steampunky feel to it. Like the addition of the gatling, but having a sponson only on one side looks a little weird to me.
Jane! Stop this crazy thing!

Thank you gentlemen for your positive comments! The asymmetric sponson was a form over function choice. If you look at the pic of the original toy you can see the "on" switch, it's the brown crates. When the switch was removed it left a smooth shelf perfect for attaching a sponson. The other side of the wagon has barrels and boxes moulded in to it which would have required way too much cutting, filling and filing for me. The Victorians had asymmetric turrets on their warships so I'm comfortable with the design. The gatling isn't a permanent feature, its mounted on a pintle mount made from the top of a small squeese bottle and a washer. This means the wagon can have a peaceful use like delivering that most Imperial product, Watney's Red Barrel

Unless used as an outrider. Alas. don't believe there's a mirror image version.

Have had a lot of the toys, but don't think I ever saw the chuck wagon. Well done!

Do have to question the barrel of brew next to the Gatling. Just not done.

It's a tableau vivant showing Sid Arthur (Everyman) between the blessings of Empire, Civilization and Commerce. ;) Actually I just added the fig and the barrel to show the size of the gatling on the pintle mount.

Of course you meant the project, but I loved the juxtaposition with 'Or that the Empire was carved out buy heavily armed angry drunks.'  ;)
