Re: Follow that Camel - Hidden Movement Counters
« Reply #46 on: 17 November 2014, 10:25:45 PM »
The Follow that Camel rules have hidden movement included.  Each unit that starts its move hidden from sight is removed from play and two counters are placed instead.  One is marked as the real unit and the other a fake.  Hidden movement counters look like this:

However the hidden movement counter looked a little bland so I thought 'what would hide hidden movement in the desert?' and came up with this - a dust cloud.

Now when the hidden movement counter is successfully spotted the counter is replaced with whatever is generating the dust.  This could be the real unit -

Or a fake unit such as  - Camels  (or a goat herd)

Goat herds to follow.

Nice and easy. The dust cloud is simply kapok sprayed in a dark brown and then lightly dusted over in yellow and bone to give it a little depth and then glued onto the hidden movement base.  Hope you like it.

As the prophet Mustapha Leek said 'It is easier for a flock of camels to enter heaven that to spot a Bedouin on a roll of 2'  :D

I like that idea, mate.
Now I guess I will have to make some tumble-weed for hidden movement in the Old West.

Might just have to borrow the blinds idea myself. The desert dust clouds from Flames of War might just do the job as a stop gap.

Thanks for the encouragement guys.  Next up are a few more Bedouin tribesman.  These are clearly from a different faction.  I may have to make up some rules that cover local animosities when factions combine.  This could be fun in a multi player game...and of course at BLAM.  :D

The black robes don't seem to have come out well in the photos.

A close up - but not much better.  I had better work on my camera skills.

I think we all know what I mean by that!.  :D :D

I have been working on my desert terrain boards.  These are twin layers of 9mm MDF with a 25mm Extruded Foam top bonded by Gorilla wood glue and weighted down with a lot of wargames magazines. (I knew that hoarding them over the years would pay off).  :)

They started out looking like this.

Then I mixed up some exterior textured paint in Sandstone, added a little ballast and grit and gave them a good coating.  They now look like this.

They need a good drybrushing to pick out all the humps, bumps and sand flow but I am happy with the look so far.  Next I added some height to some of the boards by adding layers of 25mm foam to create the rocky outcrops that I needed for some of the scenarios.  These will have broken up cork added to the front of the cliff faces in an irregular manner to look like eroded sandstone cliffs.  I am experimenting with colour tones to get from almost orange sandstone to sandy desert and I am almost there. This is what the boards look like so far.

Finally I have built a test run for sand dunes. They are ok.  I might continue to experiment.  They are produced separately to allow me to add them as a event card/hazard as part of the game mechanics and also to reposition them on the flatter boards to add some variation.

That's all for now.  I need to get on with the rest of the boards.

As the prophet Mustapha Leek said "It is all hard work and no play game time for the infidel"

Looking great Gary...

I sympathise with getting the colour right. I painted one of my boards four times til I got the colour right...

In the end I went with a base of Steel Legion Drab (light brown mixed in B&Q) then drybrushed heavy with yellow ochre, then dry brushed with titanium cream. I am now happy with result..

I did paint one of my cliffs the same but it looked awful. The black ones drybrushed cream looked so much better

cheers
