What kind of roads do you use, and why?
« on: November 05, 2014, 08:35:51 AM »
Any scale really, felt, resin or rubber. I'd like to know what people use and what their preferences are.

S&A Scenics, felt backed, a bit rubbery on top, very flexible, different widths & fairly cheap too.

I use jay cloths with brown caulking spread on top. Easy & cheap to make, and eminently customisable. Plus, you can just turn them over and iron them flat any time they start to warp!

I use this method from Architects of war: http://www.architectsofwar.com/Howto/roads.pdf
I'm actually not sure if I agree that Asphalt singles is all that "cheap" but I had a big roll of roofing asphalt left over gathering dust in a corner of the garage, and by comparison a small bit of roofing makes a lot of model road.

I haven't made any yet, but would probably use acrylic caulk for dirt roads and black fine-grain sandpaper for tarmac.

As I'm into overpass roads, I'm using electrical cable conduit parts of different size, as seen here:

I have both the Battlefront FOW roads and rubber roads from a US company that I can't remember,Battlefield Terrain maybe? They also make 12x12 squarestone(both grey and brick colored) rubber mats that are nice to use as building bases for towns.
The rubber roads are ok but the BF roads are my favorites. Both are rather pricey.
I think the BF roads are just cut roof shingles to be honest.
I wish I had more time to make my own terrain but I barely have the time to get paint on the resin buildings I buy!

Have in the past used dyed/stained bandage - advantage very flexible and cheap - disadvantage does not look all that great - so love this topic given I should move on road wise.

In 15mm all my roads are made from craftfoam.

In 28mm my dirt roads are made from latex on cloth, my paved roads are black craft foam over sprayed with grey and brown, my cobblestone roads are simply painted strips of the same material basketballs are made from, and my sci fi city roads are black plexiglass.

When I think of how to make a road, this is what I think of:
