CM tape measure in UK and US
« on: 18 November 2014, 01:51:45 PM »
While writing away ay some of my own rules project I realized that using smaller measurements might help. Then I remembered the trouble I sometimes had finding a new Inch marked tape measure here in the Netherlands. Which lead me to wonder, how prevalent are CM marked ones for you imperial using peoples?

YPU: you should start making your own version of both metric and imperial rulers, both of them separate so people need to buy perhaps both of them. Of course they need to have your logo to make them official and then remember to prohibit to use any other type of rulers in your game ;)

Used to be like that here also, but the past year I've been to 2 or 3 DIY stores, asked for one and only got blank stares.  o_o

And the ones that IKEA sells are like that, with both units of measurement. Same gomes for the ones sold on the Chinese stores. At least here in Portugal.

In the US, most tape measures have both units.

I was about to suggest that. I'm assuming you have IKEA, YPU? Should be an easy source of tape measures with inches.

Pretty much every tape measure in Canada will have both; the exception is a couple of small really, really cheap dollar store specials I keep as spares that only have inches.

Canada is, like the UK, a bit mutant when it comes to metric & Imperial. We're nominally fully metric, but have these weird Imperial hangovers, lumber sizes and general carpentry stuff being one of them - hence the dual-measure tapes, I guess.

You can also just buy them online from Amazon or such - really not hard or expensive to get a tape measure in either metric and/or imperial, and it isn't as if you need lots and lots of them.

It's a bit like sticking with a D6 or not - other dice are easy enough to find, so it's poor reason to limit a game design that way.

I've a feeling we, in the UK, will continue to have metric and imperial for a long time still to come.

As a scientist in the Oil and Gas business I've got the headache of working in metric, imperial (UK), and imperial (US). Thats a barrel of laughs.; oh and you need to make sure you are clear whether that is a UK, US or Lab Barrel...

I feel your pain, you have no idea how many standards of ring measurements there are, and none of them are used consistently.  o_o

In the fabric section of craft stores here in the US the tape measures are marked in both.  I've not bothered checking the metal tape measures from the home improvement stores, TBH, since when I'm using those I'm usually wanting the inches or feet anyway.

I've got an old tape measure that is marked in inches on one side, and ells on the reverse....
