AWI Battle of Bennington August 16, 1777
« on: November 27, 2014, 11:26:12 PM »
This week’s 28mm AWI game that I arranged at the my house was based on the Rebellion scenario for the Battle of Bennington August 16, 1777.   Scott Duncan was up visiting from Gatwick and this gave me a good excuse for the game.

The game was fought on a 10ft by 6ft table. We used the standard movement and ranges given in the rules not the 66% version that we use in most of our BP games.  I used 20 figure units for the standard units and 10 figure skirmishing units as small units.  Given the size of the units used I slightly reduced the number of units given in the scenario.  I used the troop ratings given in the scenario including the Militia with a Ferocious charge but added in some Rebel skirmishers.

Militia close in on the Loyalist redoubt

Militia in action near the Hessian redoubt

Continentals in action having crossed the river

More about the game and setup on my blog at

Great looking game ,I like the ferocious charge rule. I have been to Bennington, and that hill is very, very steep,I remembered being shocked they attacked up it .

A very good game.

Just one comment, the Brunswick reinforcements don't come on in the middle of the table (I'd also suggest Turn 7 is too early, but then I've never played "Black Powder" and would find it difficult to judge the length of a game).  The map in "Rebellion!" is wrong in that it doesn't include the main road from Bennington which passes along the eastern side of the stream and exists on the south edge of the table, just past the Tory redoubt (the road that crosses the bridge and exits on the long edge is a minor road that doesn't really lead anywhere).  Stark's main body advanced along the main road from Bennington to the bridge; after capturing Baum's command, they re-grouped around the bridge and then when they found that more Germans were coming, they headed off along the main road.  That is the road that any Crown reinforcements should enter on, as they were using the road that ran along the north bank of the Walloomscoick River.

Excellent battle report. I grew up just south of Bennington where I went to high school. I visited the battlefield many times and once made a board game version of the battle. I have never (at least to this point  :? ) collected AWI figs so I have never played out the battle in miniature. It sure was fun to see someone do so here. One small note there should be a wooden bridge crossing the river. I would also agree with Baron von Nickedoften The Brunswick reinforcements were engaged about a mile west of the original engagement straight down the road the ran along Walloomsac towards Hoosick Falls NY.

This is all great information as I set out to base my own AWI on this battle. I enjoyed the AAR.
