War of 1812 American Volunteers
« on: December 20, 2014, 07:55:43 AM »

Picture links to a gallery

These are 25mm Wargames Foundry American Volunteers for the War of 1812.   For me they were quite challenging.  I took me a couple of weeks to paint and base them.  I painted them as my second project for Ringo's Advent Challenge over on youtube.  My first project was quickly basing and painting a flag for some other models.  If you want to see some amateurish vlogs of my progress on these you can check it out on youtube.

Lovely painting. The frustration hasn't shown through (as you said, mostly fun). The basing, including the birch log and stump, are great too - adding some brightness that's needed. Well done.

Good job on getting the close ups. Wow, I am impressed with the way you based your figures. Outstanding use of static grass, flowers, rocks logs etc. making the terrain look very realistic.

Do you plan anymore War of 1812 projects? I would be very interested in following your progress if you do.

It took a night to do all 11 bases.  Woodland scenics and army painter tufts make it easy to decorate a base.  The birch tree bits are twigs from the yard.  There are no local birch trees. So I looked up "paint a birch tree" on youtube and found a ton of Bob Ross style art videos and patterned the twigs after that.

I'm just getting back into painting miniatures this year.   I painted these guys after a battalion of Peninsular British.   After that I was tired of red coats and shakos and got something different.   I'm not sure what I'm going to paint next.  Originally I had planned on painting enough British and French to recreate skirmishes out of something like a Sharpe or Hornblower novel.  Though after painting these guys I am considering doing something more North American.  Whether FIW, AWI, or 1812 I don't know.

How about some Perry AWI Indians for some old fashioned Frontier mayhem?

They are discontinued by Foundry.  Maybe cause they are 25mm.   Here's some links to foundry's old website.

I bought them from FRP games in the US.  They have a lot of miniatures on discount but they charge a high shipping to counter it.  If I were to paint more 1812 guys I'd try Knuckleduster range of 1812.

That's an idea.  I'd need to research how to do the warpaint.  The models would work for FIW, AWI, and 1812 I bet.

KD have a good selection of Indians to replicate the Iroquois of the Grand River tribes. I think they would easily fit into FIW & AWI.

KD has a many photos of painted Indians to giver one an idea how they dressed. They easily paint up well and are comparable to the excellent Conquest series of Indians. I have both in my collection.

If one is seriously considering expanding their War Of 1812, KD's extensive and growing range should be considered.

Good point although the range is small, so far. Nonetheless, I really like the BG figures by Paul Hicks...very clean lines and easy to paint.

Excellent painting.
I love these figures and bought a huge amount when Foundry restructured in the mid 90's. Some of you may recall that they ran a big sale on the ranges that they were discontinuing back then.

If your looking for a good match for these try Old Glory and Knuckleduster.
A lot of people don't care for Old Glory, but I can tell you that the 1812 line is among their finest sculpts that they have ever done. They are as good as Foundry and match perfectly. I am a big fan of good sculpting and Old Glory certainly has their share of strange poses and figures. But not the 1812 line. It is exceptional.
The only complaint I have heard is that some of the older packs that were cast as the molds were wearing out, are full of flash.
The figures that I have are fine, but perhaps check with OG to see when the molds were replaced, if you decide to try them.
Old Glory Woodlands Indians fro thier F&I War range offer plenty of possibilities.

The other line is Knuckleduster and the are wonderful figures also. And a good match size wise for Foundry. The line is well sculpted and cast and there are a dozens or so packs to choose from. An excellent company to deal with.

Perry AWI riflemen are 12 more sculpts that would fit in nicely.

And finally, Kings Mountain Minis makes Over Mountain Men that are frontiersmen that come with seperate heads so that you can create your own poses or units. The owner is a cranky old git, though.

Naw, I'm the owner. And I use the Over Mt Men from everything from F&I War right up till the Alamo.
