Return to Empire of the Dead 5/2/2015
« on: January 01, 2015, 01:17:40 PM »
After a VEEEERY long break I dug up my Empire of the Dead Kickstarter stuff and began tinkering with it again. Having painted up pretty much all the historical stuff I had at home it will be nice to return to 28mm scale and the lovely setting of Gothic Horror.

I prepped some Order of the Dragon miniatures the other day, and decided to do some conversion work on the Masked Thugs which will be used both for my regular Nosferatu clan as well as for the Order of the Dragon vampires. I added some medieval weapons for the flavor, I know they are not very "competitive" when compared to modern firearms but I really like to add some variety in my roster and no other models in my collection have bows/crossbows/blunt weapons. I also made a weapon swap and added a Blunderbuss on one of the thugs, this is from the weapon blister for EotD.

After a couple of days without being able to take proper pictures I think I finally solved the problem (for now) by using a different background. So here is the count Dracula and the "Bat - form" painted up and represented a bit more true to their actual color than in the latest picture batch.

Next up on the painting table are more Thrall's.

Great brushwork. ;D

Like you I am a fan of 28mm Vampires and have picked up most of what are available. ;D

I was very much looking forward to the Order of the Dragon faction when EotD launched the Requeim Kickstarter. Sadly I was very underwhelmed by this figure when I finally received it. I wish Andy Cooper had pushed the boat out and gone for a different look, I htink he could have done something very special in creating a new Dracula figure. Instead we have another figure in tail coat and opera cloak :?

I know what you mean, but I think the "classic" look would sell more. They could have gone  for the Gary Oldman look in the movie Bram Stoker's Dracula as an alternative. I'm happy with it anyway. But I do look forward to painting the order of the dragon thugs more  ;D

Yep, I agree. I am contemplating asking Matthew who sculpts my Boot Hill Miniatures to produce a sideline set of Gothic Horror characters inc the Count?Van Helsing etc

I might post a thread canvassing ideas on how people would like to see the Count etc and go from there.

Gothic?  Horror?

I'm in but will leave figure design to others with more artistic temperament.  Just make 'em nice without too much fiddly detail   :D

Next two miniatures painted up for Empire of the Dead. These two Order of the Dragon thugs have been slightly converted, I added the crossbow and club combo on one, and the bow on the other to give my vampire gangs a little medieval weapon support. Not that these weapons are super efficient (except for the club), but they add a lot of flavor and. I really enjoy painting the Empire of the Dead minis, they paint up quickly and the sculpting is great!

The miniatures look great.

Do you sculp the crossbow by your own? What color du you use for the wooden weapons?

The club/crossbow hands and weapons are from old Warhammer Fantasy Empire militia sprues I had left.

The wood color for the crossbow/bow is a mix of various colors, starting with scorched brown (dark brown) and adding bestial brown, khaki, bone white and light grey colors. I can't remember exactly since it was an experimental process...
The club on the other hand is scorched brown, bestial brown, bestial brown + bone white, washed with Army Painter Soft Tone and Dark Tone.

Things have been slow on the blog these past weeks due to real life stuff related to work, I have painted up a few things and have some boardgame reviews in the pipeline but have been pretty exhausted during the evenings when I get back home.

Anyway, work on the Order of the Dragon continues, with another member painted up. This is a conversion, using the blunderbuss from the Empire of the  Dead weapon sprue I bought through the kickstarter and one of the OotD thug minis.

Really like the mini and wanted to give him a different weapon option hence the conversion.
