Dr Who Valentines Game in Durham NC
« on: 05 January 2015, 07:28:32 PM »
My  friend Brian and I ran a Christmas Dr. Who Game at Atomic Empire in Durham, NC and it went well enough we are organizing a Valentine's Day Game.  We figured it would be nice id the Doctor and River renewed their vows in a Cathedral on our Victorian board.  Various allies and enemies will help our hinder the festivities.

The Daleks, Davros, Cybermen, Judoon, Sontarans, Movellans, Morbius, Slitheen, and others will show up along with various incarnations of the Doctor and companions.

I need to paint up the Master, Roman Rory, and some Ice Warriors.

Our Christmas Game took place in the most dangerous time of the year.  Each playable faction had its own goal and victory conditions.  We used a modified version of the Savage Worlds RPG system geared for Beer and Pretzels type play.  Atomic Empire Games actually serves draft beer in case you wondered why we game there.

Some of the fun events that occurred were a scuffle over technology tokens between Amy Pond and the Slitheen.  The Slitheen player decided to un suit and thus improve his stats.  A passing Sontaran patrol saw this and assumed the Slitheen to be shape changing Rutans and opened fire.  The Judoon noticed.  Since Amy was in her Kiss-o-gram outfit, the Judoon saw a local police office caught in an altercation between the Slitheen and Sontarans and proceeded to help.  This resulted in a running firefight.

The clockwork crew of the Madame Pompadour ran around the town scanning for and harvesting organs.  The Daleks rolled through a Temperance protest and were stopped in their quest of recovering Davros in the middle of the table by the Movellans who had more or less bullied the Fourth Doctor into a very temporary alliance.  The Eleventh Doctor recovered the Fourth Doctor’s time ring and remembered he had given it to an earlier version of himself when he needed it.  River had to save her mother from the clockwork crew.

Unfortunately Amy fled into the arms of the Cybermen.  The Cybermen started the game as Cybermats and at this point had converted enough of the civilians on the board into Cybermen that they needed a Cybercontroller.  Amy was destined to be turned into the controller but there was already a conversion queue.  This delay allowed the Tenth Doctor time to rig the Cyber factory to explode while River, with the help of Doctors four and Eleven and the unfortunate Cleric Bob pulled off the rescue.  Only Bob did not make it out in time before the big explosion finished the game.

We may make it down to Charlotte at some point and I will let you know.  I put some more pictures in my Gallery.  I hope to have more from some of the players but I ended up taking fewer pictures than I had hoped!

Just want to say, in my capacity as Whovian and with regard to my job at the World's Foremost Wargames Magazine, this looks and sounds like an absolutely great game - plus, I wish games stores over here served draft beer! :D
