Lydian armies around 700BC?
« on: January 18, 2015, 11:06:15 PM »
My next question is really just me thinking out loud.
I'd like to consider a Lydian army. I am however a little perplexed as to what figures to use?

It appears as though a mix of 'Dark Age' Greek culture and Asia Minor culture is what I'm looking for.
I know Essex make a single later Lydian hoplite (in fact years ago I painted a unit up)
But then I got thinking, what about late Trojan War figures?
Between Wargames Foundry and Redout, I could put quite a nice looking force together?
Do you think there is any mileage in this idea?

Cheers, looking forward to your ideas!

"Peace" is that brief, glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading.

Some great links there, thanks.

What about the 'idea' or theory of using Trojans as Lydians?
Maybe giving the figures a hoplon?

cheers

Interesting idea. Perhaps 700 BC is too early for the Lydians to be using hoplons but I think some of the Foundry packs listed as warriors & heroes might look interesting with hoplons. I would avoid two-handed spearmen with tower shields.

Yes indeed, the early figures are dated at around 1750BC???
(plus these guys are wearing next to nothing, making it a bit too classical)
I was thinking later figures. Then maybe add the Hoplon, or a large crescent shield?
