[Kickstarter] Pencil Dice
« on: 30 January 2015, 03:05:02 PM »
Just saw this one advertised - https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/d20e/pencil-dice?ref=email

I suppose it has a use, and it's already funded, but still... And what happens if you need a d8 ???

I think I'll start working on my kickstarter called "scrap paper dice". Pledge and you get some scraps of paper with the numbers 1 - 6 written on them. Stretch goals would include d8, d12 and maybe, just maybe, d20.

Mostly I'm thinking:

1) I don't think these would be well balanced enough for most "serious" gamers.

2) Why buy these as a specialty product when I can just draw dots on regular pencils with a marker (or indent them with a ballpoint, or ay other number of ways to put dots on a pencil).

3) I like mechanical pencils. I don't think I've owned a wood pencil or used one outside of a job context (in which wood pencils were all my employer had on hand) since jr. high.
History viewed from the inside is always a dark, digestive mess, far different from the easily recognizable cow viewed from afar by historians.

This idea was used by many of us years ago when we wanted to play a game and had no dice. I can't believe someone would actually buy them but then again I still find it hard to believe how much we spend on bottled water ;) ;)

Ditto. We used to scrape lines in the pencil with the end of a compass to make the numbers. You always knew when someone was playing a 'Fighting Fantasy' book in the school library because you could hear the pencil rolling across the desk occasionally.

I think it is a great idea. If you are pledging at or above the $5 level the cost is as cheap or cheaper that any other novelty pencil out there. I also think the retail level would be a great promotional bit for a game products company. Although the convention level I think is a bit high, most game conventions I make it to are well under 1000 in attendance. Too bad you can not get a convetion name at the retail level.

I could definitely see it as something companies could use as giveaway promos at cons an shops and such. Like the way companies will give out pens and keychain fobs and suchlike with their name printed on them. For that market this could be good, though not so much KS material, as any company that's already having their name and logo put on pencils by any pencil or printing outfit can just have the dots added while they're at it with no need to buy from this outfit specifically. If the idea is a known old one like Cubs and Warlord say, it's probably not IP-able.

As a product sold to end users though... no.
