Well I have actually gone and finished my entry.

But when seeing what everyone else is producing I feel almost ashamed of mine...

Very clever idea for a build Dr. Z.
Tough living conditions though, if you won't have any daylight until the weekend!

How did you finish this piece? In particular the open face - gravel or crushed glass?

I build these two actually. They are made from birdsnests I bought for next to noting in a petshop. One I cut out a section glued some card filler in and then glued some grated kork on to look like the finished coal. The other one I left unopened.
