Listening to the wife/GF/SO/Whatever...
« on: February 04, 2015, 02:29:50 AM »
So the commission is coming to an end after a very long time, and I'm thinking about what I will do for a project now that my paint time will be my own again. Needless to say, this means I'm trolling the internet, looking for what to buy. :)
Suddenly, I realize the wife is talking to me, and about minis. ??? :?  I come out of my Lead-coma, and hear her say "Why don't you paint something you already have?"
 :o ;D

Well, since I was looking to buy new stuff for my Trojan War project:
http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=46382.0
I thought I'd take a look and see if I had anything left to paint.

Oh dear. Each oval/baby food container is a chariot. Vignettes. Archers, troops, priests/priestesses, lions, civilians, named heroes, characters...

She keeps at it. (Damn you, wife who listens to my rambles! ::)) "Isn't there another box? The allies? The pirates? Sea People!"
Ummm...

So, illustrious comrades, do I need to buy that nice lot of Cutting Edge Sea Peoples from Warlord and the new Osprey? Or do I listen to my wife, suddenly the Voice Of Restraint in my ongoing toy soldiers mania?

I do find there is nothing that sobers the intention to buy more miniatures like picking out some stuff from the lead mountain to actually paint...  ;)

Sounds like a wise woman to me!

Although it is an epic tale and you could always use epic numbers of minis, looks like you dug up a goodly amount to continue with.

Looking forward to the revival,

I have found over the years that women often ask questions they already know the answer to.
e.g. some 40 years ago, when I was still a schoolboy & my mother hated me staying up 'till all hours' painting figures for a game, she would ask at breakfast, 'What time did you go to sleep last night?' 'Oh, about 11.00' I would reply, 'Liar, I went to the bathroom at 2.00 & your light was still on'
She too was a font of sensible advise, such as, 'Why not do a game with some of the many things you have already painted?'  But nobody likes good advice, do we.

To buy new stuff and risk the wrath of the significant other, or to paint what you already have?

Seems to me that you need to figure out how to sneak stuff into the house without her finding out  ;D

"New stuff? No, this is old stuff that's been in a box for ages dear.  Since your suggestion that I paint stuff that I already have, I've just been digging out my old collections."

My better half is very understanding, and asks few questions about my "hobby"

Gives me many other things to do, but in the main seems happy that I am happily occupied with little toy people and not out chasing other women  :D

As long as I behave, buy her stuff, alternate responses randomly of "I understand", "yes", "whut?",
"how much", "that's ok", "no it does not look big in that", cook sometimes, clean sometimes (my study at least partially once a year is extra on top of that of course), and in general not cock up, all is good. and I can have almost as large a lead mountain as I want...

"yes dear, I will paint that eventually, and all the rest of it, the new stuff is just to make sure I don't run out.."

I'm marrying a psychiatrist, she has a great perspective on the whole thing and is almost always supportive....except for that one time when she had a fit over some Woodland Scenics items at Michaels on a trip to see my family....we argued for 2 hours on that one.  But these episodes are few and far between :D

She is a very wise woman, despite her choice of husband, but usually she is my chief enabler! "You deserve a little treat, you've been working so hard!"  :-*

I'll hold off buying for a bit. Only 2 minis so far this year, and those only because they were sooo cheap, I couldn't resist! Surely the new Sea Peoples Osprey will only inspire my painting? (That is the line I'm gonna use!  ;))

In this case it does seem she has a point... :)  that lot should keep you busy for awhile!

...of course you may need that reference to make your painting perfect....

...its s mall purchase....hardly even counts... she probably won't even notice...

hehehehe... ;D

Cheers,

Given that she actually remembered the names of the forces and how they were related ( :o ) you really have to paint some of them. It's like an omen. How could you ignore it?

One of our club members bought a £50 board game at our show, expressly against domestic orders, and came to us on the bring and buy to put a £10 sticker on it.  Think he got away with it as well.

There's always a way.

Your wife sounds sound :)
I've taken the same rout this year. But I've bought 10 new minis. But that was a combined lot of Otherworld adventurers and RGB dwarves I got for a mere tenner... So like you, I couldn't resist :)
