Anapus River 415 BC
« on: 09 February 2015, 06:45:31 PM »
Finally my ancient greek collection has reached the point where I can to fight some historical battles. Here are some pictures from Saturday evening when the Athenians took on the Syracusans in 415 BC.
Athenians on the left limiting any flanking with low hills and cliffs in the far distance and marshy ground in the foreground.

The Athenians true to history pushed forward immediately to cross the river and get to grips, the syracusans have thrown out their skirmish line to contest/slow down the crossing while they realign their front. We had set some of the Syracusans back to represent them arriving late on the battlefield

Athenians have pushed across the river and the two battle lines have started to come to grips.

The battle has now broken down into individual fights, Athenian mercenaries pushing forward on their left flank, Syracusans militia pushing back Athenian hoplites in the centre and in the foreground things are in the balance.

Another shot sadly showing some Athenian hoplites fleeing back across the River luckily they did rally !

Final shot was where darkness fell (literally) Athenians have rallied in the centre with help from skirmishers. Mercenaries are gradually overcoming the Syracusan hoplites in the middle and in the foreground the Athenian allies Argive and Mantineans have pushed the militia back. They also rallied in the final turn but we judged it at this stage a marginal victory to the Athenians

Now if this works here is my blog if you want a bit more detail ?

Cool
"Peace" is that brief, glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading.

Thanks for the account - I did like the 'irregular' bases used for the javelin skirmishers.   River was a nice piece of terrain.

Thanks the skirmish bases are from warbases and they do a range of sizes, they just help keep things moving. You can see I made some extra sand 'bars' so the river didn't look too much like a 'river' as historically it didn't seem today a big part in the battle. M
