Recommendations for sailors circa 1860 to 1900 in 28mm
« on: February 14, 2015, 08:49:54 PM »
     Dear List Members:

I am reviving a Victorian Science Fiction project that was inspired by 20,000 Leagues under The Sea.  I was putting together a group of miniatures of mid to late 19th century sailors and divers.  I have been able find the divers that I need and some sailors were close to what I am looking for.  All of the miniatures are 28mm scale.

I am wondering if anyone can recommend any 28mm range of mid to late 19th century sailors (no preferred nationality) in 28mm.  I have the Brigade Miniatures sets and the gun crew from Eureka.  I would like to find some that might be carrying ship-related item (sextant, telescope etc.)

Feel free to post your suggestions!!

Redoubt Miniatures do some deck crew in their ACW range, one is holding a telescope.

Westwind do a Nautilus crew in their Empire of the Dead range.

Foundry have some sailors in their Victoriana range, but they are armed.see below:

Oshiro Models have some unarmed sailors wearing a plain rig. See below:

Also look at the Redoubt Boxer Rebellion range, They do armed sailors from a number of European nations. These scale in with a lot of commercial ranges.

There was a company that made VSF vehicles about 10-15 years ago that had Jules Verne style submarine that had a small crew of sailors. The name of the company escape me?

Does anyone remember what company name is? It is not Scheltrum.

The sub you are referring to is by PMC games and it's still available via EBay. The crew they sold were by Redoubt Miniatures and are still available under their ACW range. ( I know this because I bought the sub and crew back then.)  :)

PMC Games are now Forgotten Front Miniatures, available via Caliver Books:

Unfortunately the link to the actual vehicle page appears to be down a the moment!

The vehicles are no longer sold with crew.

For sailors in generic gun crew/shipbaoard posed look at the Boxer Rebellion range by Old Glory, who produce a pack of 'Naval Artillery Crews'. This pack contains 30( :o) figures in a mix of poses with random heads suitable for sailors of various European nations (France, Russia, Germany/Austria). Available direct from Old Glory in the US, or via Old Glory UL in Europe.

LAF's own Jimbibbly produces a pack of generic ship crew in European style uniforms through his Oshiro Modelterrain company (currently only with Japanese heads, but other nations heads will (probably/) be available at some point.

Newly released from Pulp Figures are Royal Navy Deck Crew (the officer is 1930s, but the others are fine for late Victorian). Pulp also produce packs of deck mounted equipment, deck guns, American sailors and tramp steamer type crew figures.  Pulp are available in Europe from Miniaturicum.
