One of the things I liked when I read the Charlie Company rules was that your squad is set up to only play a few games throughout their 'tour.' Some of the deployments and missions looked pretty interesting actually. Sadly I've never played the game so I don't know if it's good once you get into things.

I have a similar problem,  which is one of the reasons why I've not progressed my project,  but I'm trying to make some rules up to engage my existing group. They think Vietnam is too 'samey'.
Samey?? Why? Great war at the end was samey (1000 out of trench - 500 kils - other side 1000 out of trench 500 killed - other side 500 out, half killed, and on, and on,...). But in Vietnam you can play all the wargamethings: 1. Cityfight (Full metal Jacket), Tunnelfight (D&D for Moderns), Junglefight (Platoon meets Predator). Maybe you should make a weekend with the whole "Tour of Duty" and talk on Sunday Evening about gaming vietnam.
As Ruleset I think about Bolt Action with the Vietnam-Thread in the Warlord Forum.

You and I can see the potential but they reckon it's just jungle patrol after jungle patrol. My DIY rules try and make things a bit different and I've written up about 30 scenarios. Still got to actually playtest it beyond just the primary mechanisms though.

Then, of course, there's always Weird War Vietnam.  ;)

WGI had an article back in 2005 I think where they had loads of mission ideas for Vietnam. The same, samey, sameness was addressed as most gamers not familiar with the period think it's just jungle patrol after jungle patrol. Not that there's anything wrong with that. My own homebrew rules have a sorta "jungle crawl" feel to them.

I think Vietnam gaming offers a lot of gaming potential. I'm making a few urban buildings for city fighting too that are also for my modern SEA imagi-nation. Besides, the helicopters are just too cool!

I agree Elk. You should join up over at Fields of Fire. We have a real talented bunch of modellers over there to inspire you a bit.

For choppers, I've pretty much given up on kit building. Too many fiddly bits for my liking and I've had a few crash to the table off their stands in the past and it's maddening! Unimax's Forces of Valor did some nice diecast UH-1D's but they're OOP and go for WAY TOO high a price on eBay, but I'm hopeful I can snag one for a decent price at some point. Or win the lottery. Whichever.

I agree with the kits, my kit purchase will be a crash wreck. I've picked up a few Corgi diecasts over the past few years for medivacs, a hog, a frog and a cobra. I've got some Easy Model Hueys for slicks too
I'm much happier with them than gluing myself to plastic.

I'll have to take a look at Fields of Fire again. I used to browse there quite a bit. I'm sure I recognise your name from there.
