Neat idea holding the bristles like that.

I've used paint brush bristles before to give a similar and finer effect for 15mm and struggled to come up with a good idea to hold them after removing the ferule and pulling the glue apart.

Have you tried other glues rather than PVA?  I find some glue (modge podge for example) soaks in better and does not leave the plastic strip you get with PVA.  It also paints up a bit better than PVA.

One concern I do have is the use of cardboard for the roof - will this sag once the pant gets onto it?  I've never tried this material so I'm interested in the result...

I've not had a problem with card or cardboard before, there again I don't soak the material in paint. I do use a spray base coat first though so this waterproofs it.

I have found PVA to be just the right glue for this kind of application. remember there shall be gable and roof boards on top of the thatch which will cover the glue.

We shall see how we go. If all else fails I'll just have to break the credit card and invest in Oshiro terrain.

Thank you for the notes - I'm watching with interest how this goes as I have some Samurai dwarves in the drawer waiting to be painted and tempted to get some 6mm or 15mm for a skirmish or two.

Must read the rules first though  o_o

So things are moving along nicely. With my family all visiting my daughter in Thailand, I am able to get on with the village. In the latest blog post I show you the completed fences (all 22 of them) and the painting method I have adopted for the houses.

Good luck with the thatching.

Those fences look neat and tidy (as they should)  :)

The roof material, and indeed for most of the buildings, the base and wall material is pretty good. We buy cat food in pouches sold in large cartons. The card is two thin layers sandwiching a sheet of corrugated card. The outside is glossy and printed and thus water resistant. In inner is a plain brown card, but still moderately water resistant.
It cuts easily and glues well with Evo-stik woodworker's PVA. When painted it does not seem to warp at all unless absolutely drenched.
I'd recommend it to anyone for small, well braced structures such as these little buildings. For larger structures I'd use Foamcard.

Now just seventeen figures to finish painting, a Samurai Clan Patrol and a band of Sohei Monks.

i like these dwellings you have put together, especially the thatch roof, really nice effect and no need to paint this thatch
which is a bonus

All I have to do is finish seventeen figures and job's a good 'un  :o

It is worth pointing out that I am not a great figure artist. I can do a plain army standard, so don't expect Golden Demon standard please.
