Ranulf de Gernon rides forth - Lion Rampant
« on: March 02, 2015, 10:27:54 PM »
Like so many people we started a Lion Rampant project at Christmas, with a tail wind behind me the retinue is now complete. I have based them around 1150. Ranulf was 4th Earl of Chester but more importantly he lost much of his land including Cumberland and Westmorland (fair home to me and my family) to the Scots in 1136. He was much engaged in the conflict between Stephen and Matilda including taking Lincoln castle. He died from poisoning at the hands of William Peverel the Younger.

His coat of arms appears almost identical to that of the Knight on the front of the Lion Rampant Rule book although that is definitely a later period and a complete coincidence ! The retinue currently consists of Mounted Men at arms, a unit of foot men at arms, two units of Sarjeants and a unit of Cross bowmen. Ranulf is in the centre and yes he does look a lot like the figure on the rule book. They are conquest figures with Gripping beast cross bowmen. Will either paint some bidowers or mounted sarjeants next.
I chose Normans so I can double them up as a Saga warband and will probably look to use them in C&C later in the year when I have painted up my Arab warband. If you want to see how Ranulf and his retinue got on in his first couple of battles you can follow him on my blog.

They turned out pretty good. I like em.
"Peace" is that brief, glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading.
