Help needed making tyre and tank track marks on bases.
« on: March 21, 2015, 12:12:23 PM »
I'm looking at adding some tyre and track marks to my Flames of War bases to make them a little more interesting. But I could do with some advice on how to carry this out! I have spare wheels and sections of track to make the impressions in the ground, but what basing material is best to imprint into? I tried using some 'green stuff' but it was too tacky, it stuck to the section of track and some of it tore away from the base. I'm not into conversion work and therefore have little experience with green stuff, maybe I should have let it dry longer or maybe I should use something else?

Thanks, Marc.

Usually, when working with greenstuff/miliput, if you smear a little water on the thing you're trying to make the imprint with it shouldn't stick too much, just keep everything wet & it should be ok. If you still get no joy, try a little vaseline, hope this helps!

Easy enough to do using Spackle or some other plaster type wall filler. All you have to do then is wash off the parts you are using to make the impression.

I'd say go with the greenstuff, change the ration and like others have said use plenty of water as, I find if I don't wet my sculpting tools beforehand it sticks.

Also why not try GW's technical paint, I forget the name but when it dries it cracks, great looking over a greenstuffed base to represent drying/dried/cracked mud.
