Making bases for Midgard
« on: November 12, 2024, 02:15:14 PM »
I've been making unit bases for my individually based models to use in Midgard Heroic Battles
So if you want to know how I went from here:

I like this trend towards decorated movement trays.  And I have checked out your video for tips on creating my own.

Instead of magnets, I've chose to use poster putty.  That stuff sticks like glue, and gives me an easy out if I need to change arrangements and allows for groundwork over more of the tray.

TBH I only used magnets because the models were already magnetised for storage/transportation in the RUBs.
If I were starting from scratch I probably wouldn't base them single at all and would just make a diorama type base with them all glued in place.

Yours looks great.

Thank you TWD.

I'm committed to separate figures and trays.  If I decide to start SAGA, or if my 160mm trays need to become 120mm, I'm all set.

My biggest issue with the decorated tray approach is putting too much on the tray, and not leaving enough space for figures  lol

Thanks to this thread for reminding me to get my order in for this book. Just did so.

I was considering using Oathmark for Middle-Earth soon but it seems to me that Midgard may work better? Anyone with more insight into both games have thoughts on that?

I have no insight regarding the rules but I know that at both rule sets people have succesfully played battles set in Middle-earth, so both might be a good fit.

For Oathmark they made some article series regarding the armies while lookdown:

At Midgard they made a big promo fight (also Battles of Five Armies) at the latest Partizan:

Moonglum, regarding using Oathmark to play Middle Earth inspired battles, my take on it is that it’s feasible but would require some careful thought about how to portray orcs.

Orcs in Oathmark are quite tough customers - superior to humans in most respects, which doesn’t fit with how they’re portrayed in Tolkien’s novels, where they’re smaller and weaker. Following that logic, Tolkien’s “orcs” are probably most like Oathmark goblins.

Oathmark orc stat lines could then be used to represent the various types of “improved” goblins, such as Saruman’s half-orcs and higher quality Uruk Hai (my reading is that half orcs and Uruk hai aren’t the same thing in the novels, but Peter Jackson kind of melded them together in the movies…).

The other thing is whether to use wizards/ magicians. They’re rare in Tolkien’s novels but fairly common in Oathmark, and a lot of the spells in Oathmark don’t really translate into the Middle Earth setting. I would be inclined to remove most magic users and limit the spells to ones that do fit Tolkien’s setting (mainly morale boosters).

Opinions will vary around all of the points above, it’s just my interpretation!

As for Midgard, take a look at the links Mikai provided, the rules should give a very solid Tolkien novel experience straight out of the box.

Thanks for that, it’s as I suspected, Oathmark could be used well enough but it feels like I would need to make more concessions than I’d like. Out of the box is what I’d prefer as I’m looking for a rank and file alternative to MESBG (though I do really like that game). War of the Ring is always an option but something about Midgard is attracting me.
