I had several units of them for my Slann army back in the late 80s, early 90s (used well, they were surprisingly effective on the tabletop). Sold them on ebay about 10 years ago for a packet. Best to think of them more as a variety of hobbit than as a racial caricature but I don't think I'd be able to bring myself to paint and game with them now. I was going to say that they were the product of a more innocent time, but I think the reality is that they were the product of a more ignorant time.
