English longbowmen in Lion Rampant
« on: 29 March 2015, 01:50:42 PM »
Had a thought about representing English longbowmen in LR.
The current option of making them Expert and giving them a better hit value doesn't do it for me as it does not represent the longbowman's ability to engage in melee.
I think the the yeomen with mixed weapons option does a better job. Less range but you still get 12 shots and a better melee ability. As LR does not represent massed battles but skirmishes the loss of the range is not a big deal. Perhaps get the 6" back for a point?
Any comments?

My thoughts were just to leave them as they are. The longbow stayed the same, while personal protection got better and far more common. By the 15th Century there would be few men on the field without the same protection as a man at arms of the early 13th-14th Centuries, so a longbow in say 1450 was probably as useful as a bow in 1250-ish.

Obviously it's a different story in the 14th Century, but as I have no interest in that I don't worry about it.  ;)

I might be tempted to give them the mixed weapon ability as the expert upgrade and keep the range at full. This allows you to represent two classes of archer, one of which is more capable in melee than the other.

I don´t really understand why the Archer stats dosen´t represent English Longbowmen especially given the Expert abillity to thet Hit´s on 4+ while shooting. They have 5+ in Defence value and that is good for a unit not specialised in Close Combat.
