British Intervention in the ACW: Naval Battle
« on: March 30, 2015, 12:43:18 AM »
With all the ships finished, I'm now begining to build out the terrain I'll need for an alternative ACW naval scenario about a combined British and CSA navy trying to force a landing along the Chesapeake.  It's all very silly but hopefully fun and will be run at Historicon this July.  I've just began to layout the terrain templates and say suggestions on how to make 1/600 scale terrain would be greatly appreciated.

A close up of the combined British / CSA fleet.  I'm mocking up the game on my 4' x 8' table which is very tight - the final game will be on a 6' x 10' playing surface which should afford a bit more room for maneuver.

By the way, it's been awhile since I've posted on LAF - it's good to be back as the other forum that can't be named has continued to decline in both quality and decorum.

Looks good, wish I was going but I usually only manage to get to Cold Wars and Fall In.

What specific 1/600 terrain advice do you need?

Just make sure you go bright with the paint jobs, whatever else you do.

Any chance of some close ups of the ships?

As to the terrain, have a look at contemporary, long distance photos to get an idea of the level of detail required.

Here's a few close ups of the larger ships

First the HMS Warrior - the masts are scratch built and the hull was a heavily re-done cast from Bat Area Yards - I think about 60% is details I had to fix.

Next up is the HMS Hector - another hull from Bay area yards with "home-made" masts

Lastly the HMS Scorpion - this model is a metal kit from Thoroughbred Miniatures who make the best 1/600 ships models for the ACW I've come across.

I'll post some more close ups of the Union and CSA fleets a bit later

AS for the terrain, I like to idea of bright colors and I'm using gatorboard as a base to keep everything light and easy to transport.

Here's a few Union Ships (all Thoroughbred Miniatures models)

The USS Hartford:

A Staged "action shot" with the USS New Ironsides:

An just because you can't really call yourself a gamer without having stuff in multiple scales some 28mm scaled ironclads (with interiors) that I use as objectives for convention games:

I really like the ironclads that are the 28mm models for convention game objectives.  Are they scratch built?  Could you provide more photos and information on the construction and painting (weathering).  Thanks.
