Metternich, I attempted to paint Papal insignia on the automaton's pauldrons. I was not happy with the results. A while back on the Weird Wars board someone posted French troops in power armour , he produced a beautiful effect of paint worn off armour at the points of friction. I was  going for a similar look with my repaint on the clank. So there is nothing, other than me, that says the automaton is Papal.

One could also use French Zouaves for Papal States forces. There was a unit of Papal Zouaves. Many were French Canadien, IIRC.
