I love to see it when a simple paint scheme gives excellent results. It means there's hope of getting some of my backlog done to an acceptable standard!

I think there's quite a lot to be said for imposing "Dogme" rules on yourself for a given project. A long time ago, I painted loads of these guys with similar constraints: one base colour and one highlight for everything except flesh, where I allowed a third highlight. It made the project very fast, and I still use them a lot today (though I'm going to rebase them ...):

Thanks! They and their ex-Grenadier friends are lurking somewhere earlier in this thread.

As far as my updated speed-painting method goes, I find that burnt umber makes a good base for lots of colours: the red on the skeletons' clothing; the recesses of their bones; and of course the corroded bronze armour. And it would serve equally well as a base colour for greens, browns and even yellows.
