New Desert Rat Tester

Just like others I did struggle a little with my Perry Plastic Desert Rats. The smaller size and the fairly shallow detail turned painting into a chore..
However, they are plastics and therefore I do still prefer them to any metal offerings. Consequently I decided to stick by them (after all, I bought three boxes!).
In previous attempts I used GW paints exclusively but was never really satisfied. Looking for alternatives I came across Humbrol acrylics and I orderd some appropriate colours and tried them out today.

Here the result:



My colour palette is now reduced just as my painting time (about 40-45mins for a single figure, incl basing). They work great with the washes I use so I can stay with my usual technique too.
I certainly will look into getting some more Humbrol acrylics for my Afrikakorps now. Highly recommend!

He looks great, really like the face, I really struggle with Perry's faces after years of painting Hicksy's larger more animated features.

Looking good! Especially like the shadowing/low-darking.

I have exactly the same experience: when painting 'real life' military models I always fall back on Humbrol Acrylic instead of GW and have done so for 20+ years. I am not sure what it is but somehow the Humbrol colours come over more realistic while GW seem to be a bit easier to apply and more 'sci-fi-y'. So it depends on the subject which make I use.

Shame about the sort of 'on-off' history with Humbrol in revent years but it seems they are in good hands now at Heller.
