Not all of the wizards of Frostgrave employ 'reputable' soldiers. Those who dabble in the darker magics sometimes have to settle for a slightly rougher lot of sell-swords.

Frostgrave is tempting. I like the minis and I'll surly get some specialists, casters and warrriors sets, but what keeps me away from it is this frozen city idea. Tell me I can play it in a scorched city as well and I'll glady give it a try, but I won't go and build removable snow covers for all my medieval houses and ruins...

The artwork of Frostgrave shows a ruined stone city. The 4Ground range is ruined half-timber. I wouldn't say 'don't use them', but I think you should look more for Osgiliath than Mordheim.

So, somebody going to put some affordable and versatile sets of 'not-Osgiliath' ruins on the market?

Maybe you should team up with Thomarillion/Ziterdes to get some themed stuff made in hard foam for all us eager gamers out here to get our frozen blue hands on?  :)

I would want some...

GW  HAD some, but stopped making them...

I'm going with the Pegasus Hobbies Gothic building sets, which come as 10cm sections.  Not using the ruined ones, which I have painted up and covered in foliage, but the Large and two Small sets.  I can "distress"* them with a hacksaw and a lot of swearing, but at least one of the small sets is decent enough to build "as is" and leave (mostly) intact.  The rest I will probably do as half-buildings to give some modularity and recreate the "maze-like" city.

I have the same issue as Glitzer -  cover them with snow or leave them as scorched and blasted generic ruins.  I lack storage space, so tend to make quite generic scenery and use it for a range of games.  I think a couple of my fellow Lincolnites are committing to the game and minis quite heavily, so I'll discuss more with them...

*I avoided the word ruin - I can ruin any hobby project but that's a different story...

Osgiliath is easy to build if you have access to foamboards and templates. Show me some generic and free to use Gondor-style papercraft houses and I'll do a short "Build real-3D Buildings based on cardboard templates" tutorial for you.

Actually, Ziterdes does make a couple of largish ruined stone buildings (originally intended for 40K, by the look of them).  Scotia Grendel does both classical and gothic ruins in resin.  And the venerable Tamiya 1/35 brick walls could easily be pressed into service.  Rubble from chopped sprue and smashed cake decoration pillars.

Or you could just decide not to exactly reproduce the rulebook setting.

Can spears be used as hand weapons or are they categorised as something else?
Thanks

I know, but I also know myself well enough to realize that an attempt om that would end up half-finished in a cardbox, somewhere in my attic. I have a shedful of 'paused' terrain builds, because I lose interest when I cannot finish a build in an evening's time. Hard foam buildings in the right style I could use 'out of the box', or with small conversions to have some diversity.

Yup, I have the Administratum, and am going to order the Emperor Palace. If they had more Buildings, I would probably collect them all. I may buy another Administratum and leave the top part off to use as a separate ruin.

I am not a big fan of resin Buildings, as they are a pain to clean up (not to mention the dangerous dust any filing or sanding produces), and not very easy to convert.

Then there's the Hirst Arts molds: Forget about those, I'd be moving on to the next project long before the first set of Blocks had settled in the molds...  ::)

The Pegasus Hobbies gothic buildings are nice (although the lack of roofs and floors is a let-down). However, the main issue for me is the simple fact I cannot buy them in my country. It's a shame, Pegasus Hobbies should really work on their retail distribution in Europe.

I am happy to own the OOP Osgiliath set by GW, but it obviously cannot cover 3x3 table. I hope Mantic will start to produce fantasy buildings in the style of their sci-fi Battlezones range some day - that would be simply brilliant. For now, I will probably use some of my unpainted DIY buildings.

As to the mysterious second plastic set, this could be a clue ;)

I'm slightly tempted to get in on this.  I'd like the Wizard figs and I've been looking for a fantasy skirmish.  I'm a little ambivalent on the mechanics I read about in WSS.  Hmmm....

Glitzer - it wouldn't take much to play it in an scorched city, if you want. Most of the cold and is flavour. You'll have to change some of the names of things, but the rules should work just fine. In some of the scenarios things like snowstorms will need to become sandstorms, but all and all, a pretty easy conversion.

Blofeld - spears count as hand weapons.

I am lucky in that I have access to a big collection of the Gale Force 9 Gothic ruins which are great.  I am also slowly building up a collection of Hirst Arts ruins - actually this works out really well - I never seem to have the patience to finish a whole Hirst Arts building so they all become ruins anyway!

I have the old GW osgiliath stuff and two bits of GF9; I may just use a more generic fantasy ruined city vibe. Perhaps, to mix settings, winter hasn't yet come?

The other way around makes more sense. The idea is that the Frost is just starting to recede - perhaps you're guys are adventuring in later time period when the snow is mostly gone.

Even a little tidbit like this really expands the feel of the setting. Cool stuff!

Are there any pics of the sprues of the plastic henchmen? I would be interested to see what options are available.
