How to sculpt...?

I have a Footsore minis Late Roman trumpeter.  The part of the trumpet that extends above the hand (not the bell-end) broke off and I need to replace it.

I drilled out a receptor for a wire and put in the wire, super-gluing it in.

I figure that a small ball of epoxy putty, flattened a little into a disc, would be the right approach.  Dig out a little impression and super glue it on the top of the wire.  I think this will do the trick.  It will be far uglier than the original masterpiece (I'm a big fan of Footsore's minis) but I think this will do.

My questions are:
1) Is this the right approach?  Any other ideas?
2) Are these the right materials (glue & epoxy putty)?
3) How to keep them from rotating or wiggling out and coming free?

Thanks for your ideas.  I've never sculpted before and would like to learn from everybody's experiences.

The approach sounds good, but I would just put the putty ball onto the wire top and apply a drop of superglue for security after drying.

so here would be the workflow of my approach:

-stick putty ball on wire
-let epoxy cure for some time
-impress mouth-piece-hole with a toothpick
-let cure thoroughly
-add a drop of superglue
-(optional: add some putty near hand to make it more like a cone)
-paint and be happy ever after

Or use a pin head glued to a wire if you dont feel comfortable with the putty.
